HI all. I have a 98 convetible vette and I bought it used and have put probably 2500 miles on it sine I have had. The last few times driving the car whenever I hit the brake the car kind of shakes or shimmies a little. I was told that this is probably a rotor problem and was asking did I get sc%$wed when I got the car possibly. What makes the rotors go bad? I checked my tires and they are normal so I know it is not a tire problem. Thanks everyone. I kind of want to know a little information before going into the dealership so I do not get jerked around. They never fixed my metal clanking from a few months ago and it has been in there atleast 3 times if not more. I do not want to get jerked around anymore :boxing . Thanks everyone for you help.

Sounds like you have warped rotors.. Either replace the rotors or have them turned. Turning them might not fix them however.
As for the clanking... I had clanking sound coming from my left front. I took it to the local corvette dealer and they have a tech their by the name of "Joe" He only works on corvettes and he has a lot of them to work on. Anyways he seen this problem before and it was fix the same day. He said he greased a joint or something. Might have been the tie rod... If I remember correctly. I know he greased something, because I was surprised that nothing was broken. Sure enough the sound is gone and has been for 7k miles. I hope this helps. The car made the sound when I went over bumps, pot holes, in parking lots, etc.... Very loud. couldn't miss it.
Do yourself a favor and buy a set of Eradispeed Rotors, SS braided lines and some new pads. Have it all installed (or do it yourself) and you will get rid of the problem you have as well as increase your Braking performance. The bonus side of this type of set is that it is inexpensive and looks great!
There is a GP sale on the Eradispeed Rotors through 12/31 at Extreme - a supporting Vendor. They are great on pricing, service and product.
This has been a topic of much discussion on this forum. It sounds as if you have warped rotors. If this problem only surfaced recently, you didn't get taken--the seller would not have known they were gonna warp on ya.
The fix is pretty simple--have the rotors resurfaced. There have been a lot of complaints about the rotors, but warpage is pretty common among all cars these days. After you get it fixed, the best advice is to make sure your wheel log nuts are always torqued correctly.
Bluewasp - I think I have the same problem on the front right side of the car. I hear the sound as I go over bumps, road height changes, etc. The mechanic at the Chevrolet dealer told me they removed my dash and replaced all the clamps and greased everything pretty much, and claimed everything was fixed. :mad
Lashtal - thanks for the info on the new brake setup. I will look into it and ask my dealer about it.
Duck916 - I will get the lugs on my wheels checked, they should be whatever was factory, but you never know.
This is just my own belief. The previous owner mentioned he never let anyone torque the wheel nuts other than himself. He did 2 step torquing in the proper pattern and after 19k or so, the brake pedal and car still does not vibrate on braking.
Sounds like warped rotors....common problem depending on how the car was driven.
I am starting to believe it isn't how the car is driven but how the bolts are torqued. I'm on my 4th set of pads with 17,500 miles on the car. (Lots of Gingerman time) and my rotors are fine. I have had the brakes so hot that the center hub (along with exhaust) has that permanent golden yelow heat color.
The new rotors, etc., is a good idea. However, pay attention to the lug torque mentioned above. Many dealers seem to over tighten the locking lugs when they do delivery prep. Others do not seem to pay much attention to "torque" and simply power on the nuts, creating a problem. Good luck. :yesnod: :)
I have heard that not having the same torque on each lug nut causes the rotors to warp. I check mine when I do an oil change.

don't discount that the tires may be a big part of your problem. my 98 had the dreaded pulse when stopping, not bad enough to pay to have repaired, but annoying. when I replace my tires at 22k, I noticed the fronts were cupped and had uneven wear. I didn't notice this until tires were off the car. after tires were replaced and alignment, the pulsing almost disappeared :D
