Sold my Z06 To a friend. Three days later, he comes over and it is ticking. I figure pushrod/maybe a rocker arm. Pull the covers and all looks good and no miss.
Spring are standard AFR 205 dual springs. If it is a broken inner spring, would it give off a ticking sound? Car is not missing and seems to drive OK. makes me think an inner spring may have failed.
May even be a lifter. I looked at the outer springs and saw nothing out of the ordinary and pushrods and rockers are fine..
Appreciate any feedback from those who have busted dual springs or have experience with same.
I've broken inner valve springs before, and the car will not run well and misfire --- valve doesn't close fast enough with one of the two springs broken. Determine which side the noise is coming from and pull that valve cover off and start her up. Put a rubber hose to you ear and move the hose around with the car running to determine where the ticking is coming from. Also listen around timing chain area as well. Good luck and let us know when you've solve the problem
If the car is an '02 Z06 then a broken valve spring is typical , which is why the the big resale price difference between the '02- mid year '03 and the '04. Just better to avoid those cars and get an '04 or a '01 .

Reason: just a jab at the '01 naysayers

Dave, was at a party and missed your call yesterday.
I don't have any extra pushrods (other than my stock ones).
I sold you the 7.425s I had.
As a reminder, I have a like new set of PRC duals in my stock heads...if you find you need a set of springs, you can borrow those. I have a spring compressor, but not the air fitting needed to thread into the plug holes.
After I called, I remembered buying the ++ pushrods.
Appreciate the offer on the springs. I am thinking now that it is a lifter issue. When we had the valve covers off, I gave the springs a quick look at didn't see any busted springs.
After putting rockers and pushrods back in place, we started it up and ticking was quieter for about a minute. Regardless, I don't want to pull the head if it is a lifter.

Look for easy stuff too ---- like a tear in one of your fan belts of a faulty belt tensioner. A rubber hose , with one end to your ear, your other ear plugged and the other end of the rubber hose moving around the engine works wonders in localizing the area where the noise is coming from.
