Octanium
You CAN NOT raise your octane levels more than a point or two using
just a small can of booster. It just doesn't work. I'd stay away from
naptha or others. Toulene is a major component of gasoline anyway and is what is used to adjust the manufacturers octane rating. Worked
for me.

Toluene is CH(subscript)3 and Xylene is two CH(subscript)3 molecules.
The federal site ATSDR ( http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/ )allows you to compare the two chemicals ....
Toluene ... http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp56-c3.pdf
Xylene .... http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp71-c4.pdf
Xylene has a higher octane number, but because it has a lower volatility is considered a poorer choice for cold starting. Since we're talking a mix of gasoline and either chemical, cold starting should not be an issue.
But you're correct, toluene is another "octane booster" that can be found at almost any paint supply shop.
