Hey Fellas, I Am Almost Due 4 My First Oil Change In My 02 Vette! I Plan 2 Do At Home... What Brand Oil And Filter Is Best For My Daily Driver Vette.(4o,ooo Miles) Do You Put Any Treatments In? Let Me Know What U Like Or Dont Like!! Thanks
Mobile one or any synthetic that meets GM spec. No treatments. As far as filter, use a good brand name. I use Fram and Delco but I have heard there are better. I also change filters at 50% on the OLM.
good luck and do a search you will find this gets asked often.
Mobile 1 oil of course, as far as filters, use the best you can get, her the WIX are superior to most.
Chris
FYI ... Wix and NAPA Gold are the same filters. I use either one, and Mobil 1, 5w-30 full synthetic. You can get Mobil 1 at Wal-Mart for about $4.50/qt.

I use WIX or NAPA Gold, but stock DELCO is good too. I used to use DELCO Premium UPF-44 or Mobil 1 filters but switched to WIX to increase oil pressure and flow, it increased cold by about 10-15 psi. And since the oil pressure sensor in a C5 is after the oil filter, more pressure=more flow.
I will pass on some advice from my experience from my first C5 oil change one year ago:
Worry more about jacking it up safely, without ruining your body. The people here on the forum seem to have better ideas than the manual. Use pucks on the side rails, at the points where GM lifts them. I see flaws in the GM jacking points in the manual, I picture castings breaking.
Oil: Slam dunk, MOBIL 1, per specs.
Fliter: Plenty quality ones to choose from. Even $5 filters from WalMart can be a quality choice.
Additives: Don't even think about it!
I'm probably one of the few that just uses Wal-mart Super Tech Synthetic 5W-30. From what I've read, ST is either Exxon or Penzoil, depending on the type of oil and location purchased. Here is one link to a data sheet: http://msds.walmartstores.com/cache/26901_1.pdf.
I've got about 65k miles now with no problems. I'm pretty easy on the car: I rarely "get on it" and have never been to the track. I change the oil just after the the warning light comes on (9% oil life). With gas prices up, sometimes I'll drive 5-10 miles and the RPMs never get much above 2k - it's an A4. The good news is that the car is pretty good on gas if I keep my foot out of it.
Don't ask what brand of filter I use (yep). Don't ask what octaine of gas I generally run (yep). I do use Chevron b/c it keeps my gas gauge reading correctly and I fill up every two weeks or so to keep the gas fresh.
I know I'm an embarassment to the forum.
One thing that might be helpful is that in changing the oil yesterday I noticed that by jacking up the rear of the car a foot or so more than the front, I got at least 1/2 quart more oil out of the pan. I usually need about 6.5 qts with a filter change but this time added a little over 7 before the dipstick was right on. I did a search to see if this had been reported before on the forum but didn't see anything (maybe I used the wrong search terms).
The MSDS appears to be for a non-synthetic ...... but even that, given your driving style, would probably work fine for you.
And yes, if you really drain the oil as completely as you can, it will really take about 7 quarts to get the oil to the top of the cross hatch area on the dipstick.
So long as you're enjoying the car, and you seem to be taking reasonable care of it .... go have fun .....
Mobill1 is what is put in your engine at the factory
Mobil1 is listed on your engine oil cap as the recommended oil Not on my oil cap. It just says that Mobil 1 is the factory fill.
Mobil1 is listed in your Owner's Manual as the recommended fill. Not in my manual. Only as "Factory Fill"
Ya think Mobil1 might be a good choice for your engine ????? Yes
Copy/paste from my Owner's Manual...
What Kind of Engine Oil to Use
Look for two things:
GM4718M
Your vehicle’s engine requires a special oil meeting
GM Standard GM4718M. Oils meeting this Standard
may be identified as synthetic. However, not all
synthetic oils will meet this GM Standard. You
should look for and use only an oil that meets GM
Standard GM4718M.
I've used different filters over the life of the car (Delco PF-46, UPF-44, Mobil 1, and now NAPA Gold) but always used Mobil 1 Oil as per factory fill.

2KFRC5, your point is well taken. I think what BlackZ06 is trying to say, is that Mobil 1 and an AC/Delco filter is a no brainer for a daily driver car. Furthermore, as you have pointed out, one only need refer to their owners manual to make sure their oil of choice meets GM4718M. For some reason, some folks just prefer to be spoon fed information instead of just opening their owners manual.
And for those ready to cry foul saying "but I don't have an owner's manual for my car".. ....well there's good news. It's a free download from GM Partshouse(found under the "downloads" )section. I'll even throw in the link at no extra charge:

Actually even with the early year dip sticks it made sense to just throw in the extra half quart from the last quart bottle. What are you going to do with it anyways and it doesn't hurt anything.
