last Friday I was driving back home on the Freeway when the vette just stalled and the computer was giving me a message "reduce engine speed" WTF!!! I cannot believe that happened on the freeway, someone could of hit me!! I took the car to the dealer the next day, they did not find anything wrong with the car, and they said there were no codes!!! The service engine light was on but then it shut off.
does anybody know what is going on with this issue?
thanks.
The dealer probably only pulled up the current codes-- and like you said the light went off and they were gone--BUT they are still there !!! The computer keeps track of old codes without throwing a check engine light--hey are called " history codes " Often it is a code in the computer that has an " H " before or after it---I would take it to a tuner or to someone with a scanner and they can pull up the history codes for you----After you get them get back on here with the #'s and everyone will help--
Did the message say "REDUCED ENGINE POWER" OR " REDUCED VEHICLE SPEED"
Those are two messages that look a like but are caused by TWO totally different events.
Please state what message is being posted. From the description of your delima, it sounds like you expierenced REDUCED ENGINE POWER. What year C5 do you have??????????
We will get you back on the road!

You don't need to take the car to a tuner, or get a scanner, your C5 has a diagnostic mode that will show you every code in every computer (most scanners can't do that) that has posted.
My vette is a 98 manual transmission, and since this insident happened when I was on the freeway I recall reading the message "reduce engine speed" since I was watching for traffic behind me, I am not 100% sure what exactly it said, one thing I do remember clearly was "reduce and speed"
this weekend I will get the history codes from the help provided by blackz06. I hope I can get to the bottom of this issue.
thanks guys!!
Hey bill you mention the two events can cause this problems
can you tell me about them. Thanks.
Reduced engine power is caused by a disparity between what the throttle blade position sensor reports and what the accelerator peddle sensor is commanding the TB to be (or vise a versa) If they don't match, the PCM wont allow you to use the accelerator. Its suppose to allow you to run the engine in a LIMP HOME MODE and will allow the engine to idle. It will propel the car along a straight level stretch of road at a blistering 2 MPH if you have a tail wind. I was on the highway once in reduced power. IT SUCKS!
Reduced engine speed is caused when the Real Time Dampening system reports a fault that prevents the shocks from operating correctly. It limits vehicle speed to 88 MPH so that the car doesn't loose control during high speed maneuvers.
Thank you!! That really helps out a lot. I experienced the 2MPH on the freeway !!!!!! That’s it.
Im glad you know what Im talking about. So you experienced the same problem too, Bill how did you solve that issue? Is there a problem with my throttle or my gas pedal? You have no idea how happy it makes me to know that you know what the problem is...

If you didn't know it before you are fast learning why most of us consider Bill a GOD when it comes to figuring out problems just using posts on the internet.
When you display the DTC codes (hopefully the dealer didn't delete them) that will pinpoint whether, for example, an acelerator position sensor had a glitch, or the throttle position sensor, or whatever.
Ha!! Your so lucky! Well,,,it happens that waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1998,,,,GM found out there was a deficiency in some Throttle actuator Control modules and sent dealers a Technical Service Bulletin about the problem. It gave the symproms, DTC that would be sent and how to fix it. If you have the suspect defective TAC module (as I did), a simple replacement with an updated module will usuall solve your issue.
I recommend that you contact Gene Culley @ www.dmpartshouse.com and he will give you the best price. There about $240. ( a FAR cry from what your local dealer will rape you for. )
The module is a plug and play so there is not any hastle replacing it your self.
Its the black plastic box located in the passengers fender well on the outside of the PCM:
I have experienced this problem several times with my 05 vette and haven't found a fix for the problem.... Were you able to resolve this? If so, what was the issue? I have had to tow my car to the garage 3 times because my car wouldn't restart. 2 of them were also on the freeway.
