Default DTC P1416 Returns Again!

It first showed up last fall; Secondary AIR, DTC P1416. I did a Forum search, and followed Bill Curlee's EXCELLENT check valve cleaning procedure.
All was good untill last Friday evening, when I glanced down at the instrument cluster and noticed that the MIL was on. A quick check for codes, from the DIC, came up with P1416 again.

Over the weekend I did the carb. cleaner and WD40 treatment to the Bank 2 check valve, followed by a good shot of compressed air. While doing it, I blocked off the supply line at the Bank 1 check valve to allow the full effect of the cleaner to reach Bank 2.

Yesterday evening, after about 5 or 6 driving cycles since the last cleaning, the P1416 code was back. I need to know which cleaner is giving the best results. My 01 has just over 27K miles on it, and I'm hoping to avoid removing the intake to replace the check valve.

Thanks in advance,
Jim

If I remember right it took me a couple of tries to get it done. I just used wd-40. I'm not sure about the carb cleaner. I would be concerned that the carb cleaner is eating up the wd-40, but I could be wrong.

Try it a couple more times, and flood it pretty well as it has to go up to get to the check valve behind the head. I think mine even took a coulpe of days to work out.

Once you get it free, drive it daily for a little while to make sure it stays unstuck.

Thanks MattB, I'll certainly give it another try.....I'ts easy enough to do.

I was hoping to find out which cleaner, that seems to work the best on these check valves. Anyone have good results with a particular brand?

Many times the best is to just replace it---OR have a tuner turn the DTC enabler OFF--car will run fine regardless---

Your probably right, I'm just trying to avoid that for now. I'll have all next winter to do it.

I just did the procedure. Used STP Throttle Body Cleaner, followed by a chaser of WD-40. Took 3 attempts, but I was sending it all from the drivers side air injection hose and forcing it with compressed air. I've had the car out about 6 times since, prob about 150 miles total and haven't had it come back.

I would say just keep trying it a few times, beats the hell out of pulling the intake.

Just don't accidently hit the EM button when your clearing the DIC....

Thanks Wookstoc; I'll pick up some STP T.B. Cleaner tomorrow, and give it another try.

Default Update on P1416

I found CRC brand Throttle Body Cleaner at one of the local auto parts stores, and used it along with WD-40 again on the Bank 2 AIR check valve.

I'm hoping for better results this time, and will post the outcome.

It's still good after 3 days of driving. I think the CRC Throttle Body Cleaner and WD-40 combination provided the best results to get that check valve freed-up.

Thanks to all that responded, and especially to Bill Curlee for his great
write up on the AIR check valve fix.
