Default Reduced Engine Power -Lots of Codes-

Hi guys,

I own an 01 coupe and I had a weird problem happening last week.
I was driving for 2 hours without problem and when entering town I drove on a badly paved road when the chime rang, all gauges red zero (except the speedometer functionning normally and the oil pressure gauge which red max pressure), ABS and TC lights came on together with "Check Gauges", Airbag and Security lights...on the DIC was "Reduced Engine Power".
I then pulled over, stopped the engine, crancked it again and it all went back to normal.
Since that day this issue happens again randomely and it is so bothering that I don't even take time to reset the car to make this failure disappear, I simply drive with all this mess. It doesn't seem to affect anything in the car, the engine runs normal, the steering seems a bit tougher...but that's it. And surprisingly the failure sometimes disappear by itself while driving.

I pulled the Codes, here is the (long) list:

10 PCM : P1626H
28 TCS : U1301H C1214H
40 BCM : U1255H U1096H U1016H
58 SDM : U1000H U1301H U1096H
60 IPC : U1255H U1064H U1040H U1088H U1160H U1016H U1176H
80 RADIO : U1064H U1016H U1096H
99 HVAC : U1064H U1096H U1160H U1255H
A0 LDCM : U1255H U1064H U1016H U1096H
A1 RDCM : NO COMM.
A6 SCM : U1300H U1255H U1160H U1016H U1064H
B0 RFA : C2100HC U1000H U1255H U1064H U1096H U1016H
NO MORE CODES

Any idea of what that could be?
Thanks in advance
Greg

Wow. That's the king James version of codes!
They're all showing "H" for history, so clear them and go for another drive and pull them again. These kinds of problems are almost always voltage related. Voltage loss can come from the hot side or the ground side. Read the sticky up top on ground maintenance, check your starter solenoid connection and make sure it's not loose, check your alternator and battery voltage with the car running and battery voltage after the car has been sitting overnight. A bad battery, corroded connections underneath the battery terminals and any loose connection will cause these issues too.

First read the “electrical” sticky at the top of “C5 Tech”.

In addition to the good advice above check the wiring in BOTH door hinge areas. See aforementioned Electrical sticky – (top of the C5 Tech section) for an explanation.

EDIT: See post #316 on page 16 of the electrical stickey for the door hinge area wiring connectors.

Based on this, the place to start is the connectors that run in the accordion between the passenger door and the body.

Yup! It's more than likely a grounding issue.

I'd start with the door hinge area as timemender points to. You have a ton of communication codes .... sure sounds like the Class2 Serial lines are shorting and the door hinge wiring is the most common place for this to occur.

Thank you for all your replies...I'll check in the passenger door accordion. The fact is that I have the passenger window not working while that failure occurs.

Look for pictures posted by Bill Curlee regarding this issue. He's got an excellent write-up about it.

I assume you have checked the battery cables for condition and security...

I ended up fixing a bad connection to the passenger door module. Still to this day if I flash the PCM more than 5 times in an hour I get all kinds of funny stuff. I think the BCM is the culprit. I disconnected the 2 star connectors, then reconnected and this seems to wipe the problems with the BCM. Be sure to disconnect the battery before working with the star connectors.

Before anyone asks, I have a larger cam and I am working on tuning. This is why I am flashing multiple times per hour. Should just go SD I guess.

CHECK THE HARNESS AND CONNECTORS INSIDE BOTH ACCORDION TUBES LIKE IT WAS RECOMMENDED! Thats the very first place to start. This is a WELL documented failure point and causes this issue!

If you seal that bare wire and the connectors are clean and in good condition, start looking for other serial data buss wiring that could be grounding out. Ive seen the seat wiring connection cause it also. people drop stuff on the floor and the seat runs over it ripping out wires.

My passenger window would not roll down so I opened the passenger door and turned the key on and held the window button down and started moving the accordian tube around and WALAA!! it started working.
Tomorrows project: Take both door panels off and kick panels and make sure all conections are clean and insulated.

Thanks for the help.

I hope this is the problem.

Theres NO need to take the door panel off. Just service the connectors inside the door frame pocket by removing the accordion tube.

How will I know I fixed all of grounds or shorts? Is the connector the only spot I should be concerned with?

You wont until you reassemble everything and test drive it. Those door wiring harnesses are just the first place to begin. If that doesnt fix it, ill give you some more areas to look at that are problematic but not as common as the door harnesses.
