Default Do my Dyno #s look low?

Whats going on everyone. I had a set of texas speed 5.3 stage 2 heads installed along with a TR 230/224 cam. Other mods that I already had done are SuperMax headers, LS-6 intake, MagnaFlow exshaust, Hallteck stinger ait intake, 4.10 rear,Flowtech CATS with X-pipe. My Max RWHP was 393 with a modest tune. He said he could get more out of it but wanted the tune to be safe. I was a little disappointed with the HP #'s. The car pulls alot better and feels real strong. What do yall think of the HP#. Does it seem low? By the way I have a 99 FRC. with 19/20 inch wheels. Could the bigger wheels hurt my my HP #'s. THANKS

IMHO, your numbers are low. The gears in the rear are not going to impact your rwhp numbers and your wheels will make a negative impact but your other equipment should have you over 400rwhp.

With my old set up, my car made 401 rwhp with BBK shorties and stage 1 heads. Cam was a 228/228/112 but the rest of my bolt on's were similar to yours. Are you sure your cam specs listed are correct? With the LT's in your set up you should be over 400rwhp.

Are you sure your tuner knows what he is doing? Don't get cheap on this very important part of the puzzle.

They are low. The big rims are definitly robbing power but I would think only about 5-10 at the wheels. A Fast 90 would free up a lot of power.

It seems you may have some untapped power somewhere and the wheels are robbing you of 5 to 10 hp. Not too sure of the deficit. I believe my tuner said it was around 10hp but I don't recall.

The FAST will definitely wake her up but it seems it's missing something with the current mods.

I had the work done at Thunder Racing. They also did the tune for me. I heard alot of good things about Thunder Racing but I have to say I was very disappointed. They did not put my power steering pulley on all the way which caused my belt to break. This in turn cost me about $350 dollars more to have it fixed, plus $100.00 for a new hood liner. They are about 2 1/2 hours from me so I would have had to trailer my car back to them. I dont how they tried to install the pulley, but it had to be cut off. I heard Thunder Racing specialized in Corvettes and F-bodys. The guy that installed the pulley should have known that it was not on all the way since the shaft was not flush with the pulley. And good luck trying to get someone to call you back. Not happening.
I for one will not be spending anymore money with them. Lesson learned.

I'm not familier with Thunder Racing but continue to try to speak with someone there. Most reputable businesses will hear you out if their reputation is on the line.

This week and next may be tough due to the holiday.

wrong

those 4.10 will eat a good amount of power along with those rims. i did a dyno with 3.42's then with 4.10's. same setup and was around 15 lower.
if you were on a mustang dyno, those numbers arnt bad at all

I had a friend do the same exact thing and it made the exact same numbers. The sheets looked identical. I know it is "understood" that gears will rob some power on the dyno though.

I don't mind being incorrect but if you want to get technical, you must first understand that the engine does not make less power with 4.10 gears. Less power is shown on the dyno yes, but the engine is producing the same amount of power with 3.42's as it would with 4.10's. Hence "4.10 will eat a good amount of power" would not be terribly accurate either.

There is a very technical ...but confusing thread on this if you do a search. A couple of pretty smart dudes have a scientific discussion about the topic.

well, that is common knowledge.. of course nothing on the car will take power away from the motor. but what is applied to the wheels is what matters. and that would be his dyno numbers.

True...but -5 to -10hp from the dyno numbers is still not "a good amount of power". Something is still wrong with his set up or tune. He should have over 400hp with all of those mods.

I have similar mods with the exception of a completely forged bottom end and 3.42's in the rear and my car safely makes 428rwhp.

You have to compare apples to apples.

What is the Dyno manufacturer and model?

Are your dyno numbers SAE corrected?

What is the AFR of your tune?

The previous post re: Mustang Dyno is correct (Mustang Dyno's tend to post numbers that are approx. 10% lower than DynoJet 248). Dynapack's at your horsepower range tend to be very close to DynoJet numbers.

If you could post dyno sheet I am sure that some of the more knowledgeable persons on this forum could provide you with additional information.

I would be a bad doctor. I never even asked if the numbers were posted on a Mustang dyno or a Dyno Jet! Whoops.

Never mind me.

Thanks JR I can't believe it I was just about to post this and saw that you beat me to the punch.. this thread is yet another example of the fact that 95% of people don't understand that a dyno number is way more than just a number and that most of the time we really are comparing apples to oranges. As you see no one even mentioned or questioned where the dyno results came from or what calibration factors, make/model dyno,AFR ect.. Kevins car could be making 450rwhp on a Dynojet with SAE correction.. A Mustang Dyno without correction might give Kevin 380 rwhp on a hot humid day.. The same exact dynos can be off by 3%.. Thats a 14hp differnce on a 450hp motor.. I've seen stock LS-1 dyno numbers from 275-340rwhp.. Yes STOCK.. The calibration factors and different models of Dynos.. Hey Kevin. Wait till the middle of winter on a cold dry day.. Lets say 25 degrees .. At sea level.. no altitude.. uncorrected numbers, dynojet.. I think you will see that motor at around 450rwhp .. I Guarantee it!

Maybe 95% of us already know that Thunder racing uses a dynojet

What idiot compares corrected numbers to uncorrected numbers? I guess I just assume they did the corrections.

I agree, no two dynos are the same. Two different dynojets can come up with completely different numbers. You just have to take it for what it is. That is why dyno numbers are meaningless. Take it to the track

I don't agree dyno# are meaningless, but they do have to be taken in proper perspective. If you dyno x amount of horsepower, tune the car and dyno x+50rwhp, then you know you are making progress. I'll agree it is meaningless when comparing to others on different dyno's with different DA's in their area. But no matter what, you know if you dyno 750rwhp and someone else dyno's 450rwhp, that the 450 will get it's @ss whooped in a race that is not traction limited.

True, if you stick to the same dyno and see improvements its likely you are making progress. But the results aren't really going to tell you how fast your car actually is, just how much power it can make on that dyno on that day. They are useful as a tuning tool (and the numbers mean something in reference to tuning) but I still think they are meaningless if you want to relate dyno results with real world performance.

X2

dyno numbers are a tool for tuning..that is it. and dont always look at peak HP and TQ. area under curve is more important to me.

bottom line...i "think" your numbers are correct for your deal you have. put on 18's and a 3.42 gear and you will be at 420. which is the norm.

screw dynos and all the "my **** is bigger than yours internet dyno mumbojumbo" Hit a track and get a trap speed.
