I've had both the older style B&M and now the Newer style B&M.
Old B&M has ball bulge in the shaft to hold up the leather boot cover - the new one doesn't.
Question.. People with the New B&M. How do you have your straight shaft B&M hold up your leather boot? Mine likes to fall down the shaft a little. Anyone find nice tricks to keep the boot up snug??
What is the diameter of the B&M shaft? Anyone measure it lately? Maybe a tight rubber washer pulled upward against the boot??
I have the new B & M ripper and the boot remains right under the shift ****. I dont know why yours wont stay up but I would get it checked out. You know what they say if it wont stay up for more than 5 minutes you may need some viagra.
Do you have the bulge on the shifter shaft that catches the boot? At some point B&M phased that out and it's a straight shaft. The shift **** screws on lower now, which is a positive...
Just got mine yesterday, and it has no bulge or stops. Butt the shaft stays fully covered by the boot. The shifter is so short and the shift **** screws so far down, I don't have this problem. sorry
No more bulge? Huh....
I would try to turn the boot inside out by squeezing base to remove and
pull it up over ****. Then secuce from the underside with tie wraps or
tape or ...
I don't have the Ripper, but I did look at it at the Boston World of Wheels show yesterday. I think I would try a thick o-ring that fits tight over the shaft or you could also stretch it and then double it over (kind of like an elastic band) and then put it where you want the top of the boot to rest. I don't like electrical tape as it makes a mess later when you want to remove it. If you go to somewhere like a Parker-Hannifan store where they make hydraulic lines you might find the right one. We have several around here that support the fishing industry.
I cut a section of rubber tubing and placed it on the shaft under the boot and it works well for me. Make sure the tubing fits tight on the shaft and you can slide it up after installing the boot.
Couldn't find any 9/16" rubber hose. Bought some 1/2" but the O.D. was too thick to fit in the leather boot neck. Also bought a lot of other similar 9/16" junk.
Ended up using a Dipstick Grommet. The I.D. was between 9/16" and 5/8". O.D. was thin rubber. Fit tight into the top of the leather boot neck. Was slightly loose on the I.D. but ended up snugging up tight real well. Doesn't fall down at ALL now. Not too tight on the I.D. Fits perfect!! Did trim off part of the edge of the grommet where it was thicker at the base. I used the fuel line cutting tool at the Auto shop so I wouldn't slice myself up with a razor.
Happy Camper now!
