Default Rear End Installation Tips Needed

Trying to decide whether to have a dealer or a speed shop do the work. Thoughts?
Also, what should I have on my checklist to insure a proper installation?

Speed Demon Motorsports just did mine yesterday. They did the Gears and Converter. After watching them do it I would say what I spent to have it installed was well worth it. Way too much trouble with out a lift or tranny jack if you ask me. Actually I am not sure if you could even do it at home even if you wanted to.

Thanks TorchedTexan. I'm definitely NOT considering doing this myself. I just want to make sure I can verify a proper install. ;) :yesnod:

Ok cool. Gotcha, well in that case I would let a speed shop do it if you felt confident that they had done it before. There seemed to be a few "tricks" to doing it but nothing major. I can't say that the dealers have been very good around here so I always feel better when I can go to a shop and watch what they are doing.

Not a real tough job but you cant really do it safely without a lift and a decent trans jack..

Joe,

I think I've noticed a trend in the costs, dealers coming out a little cheaper. As is always the rule, you want the shop to have done a few rather than just be the low bid :) The usual suspects locally fit that bill. Note that when asked Keith O if they wanted the work on my 3.73s he indicated that they couldn't install it since they couldn't warranty it. I didn't press. They did install Bill's second set of 3.42s (and I think he purchased them there if I'm not mistaken.) His R&R labor is now covered under 12/12k warranty. :yesnod: Parra might be another dealer candidate (I can't vouche for them though since they've never worked on my car.)

As for things on the checklist... make sure the correct oil goes in. There are a couple of GM part numbers floating around, some with posi additive already in it some without. Oh yeah, you may want to look at bumping the rev limiter if you haven't already. That might justify using a speedshop with that handy little LS1-Edit beta.

Thanks Kurt. That's the type of feedback I was looking for. I'll research the "right" oil a little further.

So is your gear set in? Who installed it and are you happy with the work? :)

Believe it or not, gears are not in yet. :( That project got derailed in the fall. I'm hoping I can get back to it Real Soon Now. I plan on using either Speedworks or LGM. Got that dang roll bar to mess with too. In the mean time I'm giving Mean Green a run for his money on the pile-o-parts thing

A p/n would sure make things easy if you can find it. ;)

Also, make sure you keep us posted on the roll bar project. Many of us fellow 'vert racers are on the lookout for a good NHRA-legal bar. Any good info to pass along yet? :D I initiated a discussion with LGM a couple of months back, but haven't followed up with him. He had not yet done a 'vert and I wasn't sure I wanted to be the guinea pig.
