Default Fuel pump paranoia

About 2 weeks ago my fuel pump started making a whining noise during an all-day trip. I filled the tank up that day and the noise stopped for about 1/2 hour. I made an appointment at the Chevy dealer, took it in, and the pump would not make any noise. I didn't want to leave the car there for a problem that I could not reproduce in their presence so I took it back home. I have had the car out on several 1 hour drives since then and the fuel pump has not made any noise.

I am now paranoid about taking the car out on any long trips because I am afraid the fuel pump will fail. I would like to keep driving the car until it consistently makes the whining noise so that the dealer can hear it. Does anyone know how these fuel pumps fail? Do they fail catastrophically or do they just gradually deliver reduced pressure?

Any other advice on a possible approach is welcome. If it matters, my car is a 2002 Z06.

In my experience, some pumps whine, and some don't. Those that are louder are always more pronounced as the tank nears empty. The ones that I've seen fail just stop working. If it makes you feel better, put a pressure gauge on the rail. If you still don't have a warm fuzzy feeling, just change it out. It's more of a smelly task than it is difficult.

The liquid (gas) acts as a sound damper.....
