Default DTC Code 1286 Anyone ever fix it? Help!!

Hey Forum, I have one code that shows up like a bully in school (not that i was bullied) I've been putting off trying to fix it for some time and now it's time to deal with it. I know its a steering sensor malfunction and I don't want to take it to the stealorship! I did a number of searches and I know that I need to set the values correctly. But it calls for me to remove a bolt in the steering box, one problem though...I don't know where it is! I was hoping someone would chime in and give me some advice. I have done some DIY's posted (Thank you) so I feel a little confident that I can repair it myself...well kind of confident - I need your help!

Forgot to mention the bolt. To get the steering bolt out so you can rotate, get a long extension and 13mm socket. With the steering wheel centered and the wheels straight, that bolt should be on the top where the column meets the steering box. Remove the bolt, slide the u-shaped bracked off the steering box stem, rotate the steering wheel and put it back together. It shouldn't take you more than 45 minutes to do this. Your weekend's not blown yet! Also, make sure the 2 wire sensor harness didn't come unplugged that monitors the steering position. You should find it clipped on to the cradle on the front side.

LOL! It looks good in pics but boy are they faded! Thanks for the info! Do I have to remove the whole console and everything? Since the steering wheel is locked when you take out the key, do I have to leave the key in the on position? thanks for the help!

No problem. Just give me some money and the wheels and I'll take the extra time to polish em' up real nice like!

Once you separate the column from the stem, just turn the key on and spin the wheel.

Anyone here can tell me the exact location of the steering box, and the bolt that need to come out? I'm not asking to hold my hands on this, but I don't want to blow my car with my bear claws for hands....

Miracle needed.

steering box is the drivers front of the engine bay and under the alternater. Just remove the bolt--place it in a safe place--and slide the coupler toward the engine to take it off.
