I didn't plan too well and now I have (as most of y'all know) gears and a converter, among other things ;) sitting in the garage. And now I'm getting itchy for the install, especially considering I pulled a 12.564 on Thursday :D
I'm loaded now and know I gotta contact Steve and send it back to a reprogram, my question is this.....If I can get them installed relatively soon and wait on the computer:
what are the issues of driving around without the new program?
Re: Gear/Converter Swap - Computer Qs (Mean Green 2000)
If you weren't switching the gears, it wouldnt be a real big deal. Since you are changing the gears, and your transmission shifts based on vehicle speed, your shift points would be HUGELY messed up without proper PCM programming. The PCM programming corrects the speedometer, which in turn allows your vehicle to shift at the proper RPM. I know a few A4 guys have made a gear change before PCM programming and their car was barely drivable.
I suggest getting the Powerloader sent back just as soon as you can so that you can get the install done when it returns. I honestly dont think you would have any fun at all with your car with the new mods installed if you were waiting for the PCM programming to show up.
Re: Gear/Converter Swap - Computer Qs (Mean Green 2000)
Hate to see those gears gathering dust (!), but I don't think its worth it to install now unless you know that you will get your reprogram in hand quickly. The car will throw codes, and it will not run right. There are A4 guys around here who know the details.....
I would agree with MattG on this one. I drove mine for about half a day before I got it loaded and basically it still drives but it won't shift at WOT. Otherwise its pretty normal. Sorry to say but I think you should wait until the loader comes back.
Mean, I agree with the 'get the programming ready first' advice. A nit though... The speedo does not require any programming to be correct. However the shift points do need to be corrected since they are now at a different RPMs with the new gears. Send Steve some flowers or something, maybe you can go to the head of the list :blueangel:
:smash: Mark these guys don't know what they are talking about. Just go ahead and install the gears and lets say we have a little race, just you and me :D
I had 2.73 and went to 3.42, now maybe, I should have gone 3.73??? If I had 3.15, I would not just go for the small increase, 3.73 would have been a must. You will be sorry, like me.

MG, I just got my Powerloader from EXIT 28 last week. It's programmed for the SY 3500, which I also got from RG @ EXIT 28. I just need to make a
decision on a used set of 3.42's or new ones. Whose going to do your install?
2.73's to 3.42's with TC and Powerloader...cant' wait!
