picked up a new FAST 78 on ebay for CHEAP so I pulled it apart today to start porting it a little. This is my first FAST so anything you want to point out have at it.
There's a thick plastic ridge that sticks out on into the exit runners. I'm not sure if FAST put that there to help out cars with stock heads maybe or what?
Here's a before pic:
Here's a pic after I roughly removed the ridge sticking out and blended it a little with the rest of the runner:
On the entry side there's a rather large hump in every runner.
I'm not sure if it's there to serve a purpose but I couldn't see it doing much besides disrupting airflow so I removed them.
That's as far as I've got so far and I'm about 3 hours into it. I'm going to do some more work to the entry runners tomorrow. Hopefully in a few days I'll have time to pull my LS6 intake off and bolt on the lower shell and port match it to my ported heads. I'll post up more pics as I get further along.
After all the major cleanup is done and everything is port matched I'll go back and smooth everything with some fine grit so it's nice and smooth again.
If anyone experienced with these has any other tips please let me know. I'd like to get it right the first time and not pull it back off later.

Yeah all the ported FAST intakes I've seen have the exit runner ridges removed. I saw a couple of pics of an intake Ed Curtis is doing and it appears he's removing the humps in the entrance runners as well.

Been waiting on this for a future project....Stupid question, did you have to cut the intake apart and if so, how do you put it back together? Wonder if there are any books on this procedure? At any rate, keep us up to date on the progress.
I ported mine! VIPERBLUELX Your doing everything that I did. I removed my gaskets so that they would not get damaged. If you do, make sure that you lay them out on a piece of cardboard so that they go back in the correct area.
I made significant mods to the opening to the plenum/runner area. You can do a lot of contouring in this area.
Match porting it to the heads is important. I was very careful not to gouge the runners and made sure that they transition smoothly.
I bolted my lower plenum to the heads prior to installing the heads to the car to help rough them in.
WHEN YOU REASSEMBLE THE INTAKE,,,,,,makes sure that you get all the gaskets in the correct places and that all the ends are sealed with RTV. Its important to make sure that you don't have any leaks. I sealed all my ports and filled the intake with water to see if I had any seam leaks. There were NONE!!

The 3 shells are just bolted together, they have rubber gaskets with RTV sealing the ends. When you take the bolts out it will come apart easily, you just have to make sure you get the rtv back in the correct spots to seal everything off.
Boy that's a good price.....VIPERBLUELX why didn't you port the OEM intake ? Is there that much performance difference?
The OEM intakes are 1 piece so basically all you can do is port match them to you heads, but you can't do anything porting on the inside.
With my cam and ported heads I hope to see a 20rwhp increase with the FAST 78. It might not happen with the reverse split cam, but at least I'll have it on the car for when I do a cam swap later on.
Sorry for the noob question, but how do you port the intake runner to the head ports. : I was contemplating sending my FAST off to have this done, but the job looks fairly easy. I would rather save 400 bones and do it myself!!

You know the saying; can't believe everything you read That being said, most of the articles I read concerning the FAST 78, stated that there was not a lot of gains over the Z06 intake. Haven't seen any #s to substantiate the negative feedback, but that's pretty much all I've seen written
It would have been great on a project like this, to see a couple of dyno pulls with the stock intake, 78, and ported 78. Since pulls are so expensive, most just dyno after several mods, so it's hard to tell what changed the #s.
