Not an expert on them, but on the '99 I gave away to my son in May, I put 310K miles on them and they are still on it. The probable cause of a failure is mixture problems or excessive oil getting through to them resulting in their getting plugged up.
Blow by, and rich fuel mixture ( poor spark, lazy O2 sensor, restricted fresh air , ect. )are the most common causes . How long will they last ? I have a '79 T/A that has the original Cat on it.
CATs last on the average 80K +++ miles 80K is the federal mandated warranty for cats. I have seen cats last 200000 miles.
Poor fuel economy cause an excessively RICH condition and that causes CAT over heating and destruction before that time period. The other cause of death is age. After the CAT gets old the rare metals that convert the gasses to inert compounds become weak and need to be replaced.
I would say 200,000 miles is the period of useful service.
Getting code that says going out at 55k mi. Opinions please?
I always remove them and have all of that "tuned out", so i don t get codes etc,.. I don t know where exactly in Missouri you re at but where i live, in Crawford County, I DON T HAVE EMISSIONS!!!--Jason
Why do converters go bad & how long should they last?
Original Cat still on the '88 Dodge Caravan, which we purchased new, now with 240,000 miles that we gave to our son. In fact, the darn thing has the complete original exhaust system intact!
