Default 2.4 volt steering sensor question

I have been trying to adjust my steering because of steering codes. I understand that it needs to be at 2.4volts center on a volt metter. My question is I know to plug into the center blue wire but do need to unplug the wire and test or slip it in the connector attached?? Also, when trying to read the metter while turning the wheel,do I ground it to the seat bolt or do I not ground the metter to get my reading? another, should I be rotating and looking for the 2.4v around a straight steering wheel inside or could it show that 2.4v at any position of the steering wheel? Lastly, If I can't get my reading what reading would I get to know if I need to replace it? thanks for any help on this...

Those things are a pain to get right. You have to have all the wires plugged in like normal when testing. Just poke the end of the meter in to the plug and yes you need to have the one wire on the tester grounded so it can measure voltage. The steering wheel will be near the centered position to get your correct voltage BUT it may be off several rotations either way depending on how much the steering wheel spun while it was disconnected.

will the reading be a steady 2.4volt or will it flash a 2.4 and then change to another #? when I tried it I got alot of 10.?? volt #'s but every once and a while I would pass over a 2.4 for a instant but then it would change to another#. I hope this makes sense...

yea I understand what you are sayin. Does the voltage stay steady if you don't move the steering wheel? Also when you seen the 2.4 how was the steering wheel positioned? It's hard to get right on 2.4 because turning the steering wheel will change the voltage, even turning just a little. Do you have the steering shaft unhooked? I mean if you get the steering wheel in the 2.4 range and it looks straight then you will be good. I'm sayin that because if you get in the 2.4 range and if you tried to turn the wheel one turn either way it would be a long way from the 2.4. I say if you can get close to the 2.4 and the wheel looks to be straight then stop there and jack up the front of the car and make sure the tires are straight, you may have to pull the tires around to make them straight and then hook up the steering shaft. Don't let the steering wheel move.
