Possibly, but I doubt you have the instrumentation to measure the benefit....

There would be a benefit, slight but a benefit. the real improvement would be over 60 mph or so. It is unlikely that buttometer would measure it.

Actually, there would definitely be a difference. I went the stealth route by cutting out the shroud area beneath my filter and installing stainless steel screen and a polycarbonate scoop. I also data-logged intake air temperatures before and after my mod and there was a significant difference. Before the mod and during slow-moving and stop & go driving, intake air temps climbed to over 140F, effectively causing the engine ECU to retard timing and chop 10 RWHP. Once the engine bay heat-soaked, it took 20 minutes of highway driving to get the temperture down to 110.
After my mod, temps never climbed past 104F and after 5 minutes of highway driving, they plummeted to 80F.

You'll probably notice a difference if you apply a vented screen plate.

I'm interested in the mod, Dave68...I'll have to think about it..Im not crazy about cutting things on a car. But those kinds of ideas are what I like. Thanks..I'll save the link.

Paully,
There is at least one person who did the cutting without removing the lower radiator cover and certainly, it is possible to do this if the car is up high enough. However, installing the screws and nuts for the screen and scoop would require two people if the radiator cover is in-place. I believe I added instructions for double-sided tape under the scoop flange, not too long ago. This tape distributes the stesses on the scoop from high air velocity at high speeds.

GM noticed a difference when they designed the Z06 with screens in place of the panel. They also opened up the front of the Zs air cleaner housing to allow more air into the filter. On the 01s the opening was smaller than on the 02s through 04s. If it helps the stock Z it will help a stock C5 with a Blackwing open element air cleaner.

NO question it will help--shine a flashlight thru the screens and see all the light towards the z06 airbox--cooler air=more ponies

tuner did it to mine when installing the heads and cam - when drag racing I take the front "corvette" cover off and have holes drilled through the fascia behind it for a little more air

I ran the BW with the std fog light shrouds for awhile, and recorded IAT's at various conditions. The temp would never hold ambient, even when starting out cold and never stopping, the IAT would go to about 10-15 above ambient. I was definitely pulling underhood air even when moving. And once I stopped, the IAT went out the roof, and didn't come back to better than 20 degrees above ambient, even after 5 miles of high speed.

After cutting out the shrouds, If I am moving at all, the IAT stays at ambient. When stopped for awhile, the temp still goes up, but not nearly as far, and it comes back down much quicker.
I can stop, get the iAT temp up, say 15 degrees, then drive along and hammer the throttle. The IAT will quickly drop 5 degrees or so, indicating I am ingesting all cool air.

So, yeah, it helps a bit, but not as quickly as a true CAI, like the varraram.
