so today i pulled off my Ti exhaust, and picked up a set of standard C5 muffler take offs for $80. I cut off the up and over pipes from the mufflers and bolted them on......loud, but i'm happy with the way it sounds. I have two 12" resonators i ordered that i will pick up tomorrow and weld on to the ends of the cut off up and over pipes. hopefully this will cut down just a LITTLE of the harshness and put the sound out past the rear facia just a little more. now to fab up a stainless rear box-style tip...i assume the popping on decel is due to the horrible H-pipe design?

Reason: afterthought
I was in on this when you were just talking about doing it. Did you cut up the Ti's? I hope not. That is a good bit of money that you may want to put back at some time in the future. It will not pass inspection without mufflers in Texas.
I bet CA is the same.
The popping is due to no mufflers. You will not stop that. Mine has Corsa mufflers and it pops some.
Good luck with it.

no Boulty, i got a set of take offs from an 03 standard C5 for $80 at the local vette shop. I had a few drinks in me the night of that post but thanks for talkin me outta cuttin up the Ti's I dont know what brand the resonators are, i will know tomorrow. to look at them, they are pretty much glass packs, just like the bullets have, but they are HEAVY DUTY. ill take pics. i just drove it home from the shop, anytime you lug it it DRONES like mad in the cab, but keep from doin that and its not bad AT ALL while cruising. pretty much 1k to 2k rpms is where its bad. im glad i did it tho, anyone local is welcome to listen. thanks guys
pretty good drone in the cab, but i expected that. no brand name on the resonators. 3" stainless is all i had layin around for the tips. i
m happy, well see how long i leave em on.

ya i still have cats. still loud tho. i just went for a ride with my friend who has an 02 with unknown brand longtubes, no cats, and some sort of corsa pipes and his screams compared to mine. mine has a really low growl, same tone as say a chevy silverado with flowmasters, but raspier...weird. i like it so far tho
The tips look good. You did good work.
It should pass inspection as those will qualify as mufflers and the fact that you kept the cats on.
The mufflers are going to get louder as you drive it more.
Nice job, to say the least, different, one of a kind, and now sounds more like a performance car. Glad you didn't sacrifice the Ti system, and the old system gives you a fall back in case you get tired of the new found sound. Keep up the good work.
thanks guys, i had fun making them, learned alot, and yep i kept the ti's cause these things gave me a headache on the 75 miles drive home. found a few more pics. polished up the stainless tips more today. wasnt sure about 3" tips but its growin on me, looks clean i think. these resonators definitely took the harshness out of the straight pipe setup...almost too much, no BRAAAPPPPPP when you hammer down, just a roar.

Not many directly answered it but YES the popping you hear on decel for all practical purposes is due a free flowing exhaust that doesn't muffle it and is enhanced by the crappy H pipe! Good crossover effect as in most aftermarket X pipes greatly reduce the popping and crackle! I'm mulling this over right now as I'm running stock H with Corsa touring and I've gotten to where I kinda like the toned down crackle pop on decel. But I have a chance to get an almost new Corsa X pipe for cheap! Debating if I want to loose that sound!!! Glad to hear you saved the TI's,,,would have been tossing money out the window!!
Am I seeing what I think I saw in your excellent photo looking back into one of the resonators? It appears the resonator core is louvered (instead of perforated) and the louvers are facing backwards. If that's the case it seems the resonators would be quieter if the louvers faced upstream. Apparently there were no directional flow arrows marked on the resonators? I enjoyed riding along on your modification story and hope you can live with the new music for a long while.
You are correct. They " appear " backwards. Both exhaust shops assured me this is correct tho. To tell the truth I tried both ways n this seemed quieter. Idk honestly. Time to sound insulate the trunk now!
