Default Help with shifter

Took the existing shifter out of my ZO6 today to install the MGW shifter. When I pulled the existing shifter out I heard something drop that sounded like a piece of metal. Searched with a light and a long magnet but did not find anything. Any ideas on what happened? Thanks,

Gene

I know I've done it. I finally got mine out with a magnet on a flexible rod, but I was prepared to leave it in there. It is an L shaped piece of rod about a quarter inch on the lower part of the L and inch and a half maybe long about the diameter of a 8d nail...

That's what I was thinking as well. BTW, it is exactly 1/8" in diameter so if you don't have the OEM pin and need to use it, a 1/8" drill bit works perfectly.

To get stuff I've dropped in the tunnel, I've driven up/down my steep driveway and slammed on the brakes. Usually works.

I'm trying to picture the look on your neighbor's faces while that's going on.

Gene,
I feel your pain! I dropped a socket when installing my headers & had a h*** of a time figuring out if I could find it! Speaking of headers, how do you like yours?

Heres a picture of the pin just incase your interested.

The pin in this picture is inserted into the alignment hole to check the alignment.

When you pull the pin UP, it sets in the TOP of the grove and is disengaged from the shaft.

I agree,,,thats what probably fell out. Make sure you use the new shifter fasteners that came with your new shifter. The OEM ones will be TOO short to properly secure the shifter on the box.

Thanks to all for the help. Have to agree that the pin is what came loose. Have used the magnet on the flexible rod but didn't latch on to anything. Drove the car several times and guess I will take the new shifter out and see if I can find the pin now.
Wayne, really enjoy the headers when I'm by myself. Have to stay out of the throttle when I have the right seat occupied.
Again, thanks to all for the help.

I put a hurst shifter in my car and I dont remember a pin being there. Could this be why I have shifting issues? What should I do?

That L shaped pin is only there to lock the shifter in Neutral which allows you to loosen the shift shaft and put the trans in Neutral. Once you have that neutral reference with the shifter and trans, tighten the coupler nut and your done.

That pin doesn't need to be there any more. I have an aftermarket shifter ( KIRBAN ) and theres no where to store that pin like on a stock shifter. I RTV'ed mine to the tunnel so I wont lose it.

You can use any small pin/rod that fits in the hole to lock the shifter in neutral if you've lost your original pin. Place the shifter in neutral and slide the pin in (you may have to jiggle the shifter to get it to slide in) so you can center the shifter shaft and then tighten the coupler. Puul the pin out to free the shifter and make it operational.
