I am having an OCD moment while installing my timing chain. I actually put the oil pump on and timing cover and while waiting for my heads to come back from machine shop I got to thinking maybe it was off a tooth. Well I had to confirm. I hate the amount of slop the new LS2 chain has and can't seem to line the marks up perfectly. Anyway I had the bright idea of using my laser level to check it. I made sure the top of engine was level first. The laser is passing directly through crank timing dot, hard to see in pic. What i don't like is that I had to back off chain to get the two to align. Notice the slack on right. When the chain is tight like it would be on the right when running the laser passes on outer edge of cam gear timing mark. Am I over thinking this?
Yes. Always turn on one direction, i.e., clockwise when facing the motor. Simply bring the crank dot to 12 o'clock, cam dot should be either at 12 or 6. If you were off one tooth you would know immediately. No substitute for using a degree wheel though.

Thanks. I know I'm being paranoid. By the way I've been studying your posts on setting up the Yella Terra rockers for proper wipe. Now I'm fixated on getting mine perfect too. Interesting info, I'm glad you took the time to write it up..
