Default HVAC System Components

Hey all,

I have a C4 with a C5 interior conversion in the works and I'm trying to figure out what kind of HVAC control I want. If I wanted to put the MANUAL HVAC controls in my C4 what would I need?

Manual control module and what else?

I do have a harness out of a C5 that I can cut/splice connectors and such. I just need to know what components i need to have in order for the system to work.

Any info would be fantastic... i know this is far out in left field.

Ok, after some more digging I found that there is a vaccume or "power" control module that the HVAC control module communicates with. Is there anything else i need for the system to "function". I'm not worried about the actuator interface because i'm going to integrate the C5 vaccume control module with the C4 actuator system and blower. I may need some of the C5 blower control components i suppose.

thanks,
scott

HOLY CRAP! Why do you want a C5 HVAC unit???? Whats wrong with the C4 unit and why the up-grade. Your doing the COMPLETE DASH???? WOW!

You know that the C5 HVAC modules are connected to a serial buss and have Body Control Module interfaces. You may be able to operate it without the BCM but I will have to look into that statement a little deeper. There are other modules associated with the HVAC module. The fan speed control module is mounted in the ducting near the C5 fan motor and yes you will need the vacuum module.

If I were you, I would find a MANUAL HVAC unit. It is a lot more dependable and doesnt have the complex BCM interfaces.
The C5 HVAC unit uses vacuum to control all the damper doors and uses servo motor actuators to control and regulate temperature.

Your still going to need a BCM to get the IPC to function. Take a look at a C5 service manual and see if you fully understand all of the inputs and outputs your going to need or simulate to make a C5 dash work in a C4.

Tough project but good luck!

Just to clarify, I am using the MANUAL control unit.... no way was I going to use the automatic climate control system lol. And why do you say that I need the BCM for the IPC to work? I've been using it without the BCM for quite some time. Granted I have to clear the codes off of it everytime I drive but thats no biggie for me... i'm sure I'll figure something out in the future to prevent that from happening.

Below are some pics: Keep in mind that my C5 steering column is not here yet... the pics have my old C4 column which doesn't match up with the dash and cluster. Sorry for the crappy quality pics... took them with my phone.

Here is the dash area before I started with the dash install

Here is the first mock up of the dash pad drivers side area

Dash after all mounting is done and the DIN tray is mounted

Another 2 shots of the dash after mounting

And here are a few of the LS1 in its new home.

ok, i must have been tired or just plain forgot... i bought an HVAC vaccume control module. Duh, i dont need it for a manual control setup. Can somone please post a wiring diagram up of the manual HVAC unit inputs/outputs and a picture of the back side of the manual unit??

I think the dash harness I have has the digital climate control. I assume the manual unit does not have the same type of electronic connector that the digital unit does (please say they have the same connector interface)?

Oh, and I've decided to use 96 c4 door panels and fabricate the dash interface with "pour foam" and fiberglass. Should be interresting.

Thanks,
Scott

Scott, nice LS1 in there! I've put a C5 dash in a Fiero before, so I can respect the amount of work you had to do to get it mounted...and certainly the reasoning to do a dash swap in the old C4.

However, did you consider swapping to a 96 dash? It would have mounted to the 96 door panels much easier...and all the plastic mounting, etc could have been transferred - making it much easier, much more solid, and much easier to do the finishing touches. As the cab didn't change, it would have been easy to make 100% factory looking...

Judging by my time spent to do the mount vs. the finishing touches, I'd say you have another 50-60 hours ahead of you to complete this...Best of Luck!

I think I've seen some pics of your dash swap around somewhere... maybe 2 years ago? The reason I didn't used the newer c4 dash was because I was using the C5 cluster no ifs ands or buts about it. So i didn't have much choice because the C5 dash just looks better. Of course had the C6 been out when I bought the items I probably would have gone that route because it would have been a little easier (not as many curves).

I probly have more than 50-80 hours left due to still having to fab up and mount the C5 steering column. yay. But hey, anything worth it isn't ever easy right? ha

well, its been a while but I have made some progress. The entire dash is completely mounted solid including the glove box and DS kick panel. I'm in the process of finalizing the manual HVAC control wiring. I have to get the blower control module for the 4-5 speeds and I'm still devising the best way to use the electronic servo motor to control the stock cable actuated temperature door.

I also decided to use the closed loop radiator system out of a 90-96 vette with a surge tank. Luckily there is only one vaccume valve to turn the heater coolant flow off . The biggest problem i have run into now is that my 84 crossfire hood will hit the surge tank and doesn't give me the clearance i need for using an aftermarket c4 CAI or C5 type CAI... so i need a new hood ($1600 something for a toledopro cowl hood).

I'll post any progress and pics sometime in the future. I'm busy so I can't make any promises.
