Sounds like a normal gauge sweep when alot of power is drawn, like when the starter is engaged. Is the gauge going to zero when you drive? The gauge going to zero when driving and the tank being full has happend to many people. It is usually a fuel additive issue. Happend to me in Fla and I ran a few tanks of fuel injector cleaner and have not had problems since.
Sorry to jump in this thread but I am having a similar problem with my 99. Full down to 1/4 all works fine. Then when it hits 1/4 it drops to empty. This seems to only happen when on the highway. Will the Techron additive help?
If the problem is due to dirty sensors, Techron will help. It is not an over night cure, may take a couple of tanks or more. When I had the gauge problem, I added a bottle to one tank fill and then started using Chevron gas at subsequent fill ups, in a month the problem went away.
There is a firmware update available as well that shows this issue. Although the update is supposedly fuel curve information, I was having the same issue on my '99. Used the Techron and it would be Ok for a while, then come back. I had the updates put in, no more problems with the tank going to zero. Your guess is as good as mine.
