Default SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK! Harmonic Balancer?

Okay, so I have that insane squeaking coming from under my hood...I looked under there and listened to where it was coming from and I'm pretty sure I have it narrowed down to that huge wheel that holds the belt at the bottom front of the engine..which i'll call the harmonic balancer because I dunno what it really is.

Anyways, what would cause it to squeak like that (pretty sure it isn't the belt, they aren't cracked and look good)? How much to replace? Should I get Delco?

Opinions, thoughts...and thanks!

i have had that going on for months. Very annoying. I repaced my tension pulley, and my idler pulley because it sounded like a bearing. Replaced all belts, used belt dressing and still squeaking. Not related to the use of the fan either. If you find out, you win a million bucks!!

remove the serpentine belt and start the engine... see if the noise is still there or not.

It's vibrating pretty hard from what I can tell after I popped the hood...it's supposed to do that? There's gotta be a way for me to narrow this down abit...hope I don't have to go down that same route you did =/

If the harmonic balancer/damper is wobbling it must be replaced as soon as possible.

Below is a link to a thread concerning pinning the crank to keep the new balancer from spinning on the crankshaft. It is a worthwhile mod to do while it is apart.

You're on Long Island, so call Vette Doctors. They are well known, and I know many forum members in our area who use them exclusively for all vette repairs and mods. They have a great reputation, and I'm sure they can figure out the problem, and repair it for you. If it is the Harmonic Balancer, it is not an easy fix, or something you want to do without the right tools or experience. There was just a write up about how many hours, and what you need to do to change this, if you do a search. Call the Doctors.

Change belts and idler pulley. Could also be pulley on your water pump.

I changed all pullies.............and both belts when I was getting some massive squeal. Out of all that was changed..............the little AC belt was the culprit of the squeal !!

Two A/C pullies were the cheapest. Tensioner pulley was around $55 (non slip design). Belts dirt cheap. I'd say change all of the pullies and two belts out and it will eliminate your squeals.

BTW, my little AC belt from hell was not cracked and looked ok as well. Don't let that fool you. As someone posted above, pop those belts off and start her up. That should answer your question.

When my A/C belt begins to squeak, I just wet the tip of my finger in some silicone oil and rub it on the belt. The squeak is instantly gone. I think the real problem is that I have some seepage, from the water pump, that is getting on the belt. Probably need to change it soon but the silicone oil fix works for some time.

Yeah I figured it could be all of those things...i'm gonna just replace everything but the balancer...eliminate all possibilities otherwise...if it winds up being the balancer, i'll know it at that point.

VetteDoctors? Look at their website, their prices clearly fall into the "you own a 'Vette, therefore we're going to rape you" catagory.

I'd rather just go to the dealership for stuff like this.

Silicone oil sounds like it may work, i'll check that out, and I hope that I can narrow it down soon...this squeaking is far more than annoying.
