Default Aluminum Lug Nuts

I see forged aluminum lug nuts guaranteed to about 300# torque for sale by various speed equipment dealers. Do they stay tight? Will they work for HPDE use? General thoughts, pro or con?

What would be the advantage? My life depends on it, I want steel nuts. Minimal weight saving?

The weight savings would be minimal but an advantage for unsprung weight savings. If you cross thread one, you would screw up the nut not the stud which is more difficult to replace. I think the strength is there. Remember, you're already riding around on aluminum control arms. What I was trying to figure out was if they would stay tight during track use. It seems they do, but they don't survive the repeated use of the impact gun all that well. Probably one of the reasons the racers don't use them as much.

I think I'm giving up on the idea of using them.

I wouldn't use them personally. Fatigue strength for aluminum in general is much less than steel. Threads are fine and highly loaded due to prelaods, making them more susceptible to various failures including stress corrosion cracking.

Yea, I guess I'll go back to steel. Now out to the garage to replace the stud that started me thinking about aluminum.
