Default reverse question

I am new here and i am in the process of buying a 2000 corvette with about 60,000 miles , it has a stick and when backing up it sometimes pops out of reverse . any ideas or input would be great, or should i stay away from it , or how costly to have repaired .

thanks
pete

I could be a simple shift linkage adjustment. I would have it adjusted before you buy or I would walk, because you are looking at an expensive repair if the tranny is bad.

Its a common issue and most likely damage inside the trans. If your paying top dollor for the car, WALK. Maybe you can negoeate the repair out of the price of the car. The repair isnt costly, its the labor to do the repair that sucks.

Yeah, I agree. If you don't have it yet, unless they'll negotiate the price downward to compensate you, then walk. The repair of the trans will set you back about $2000 to $2500 with all the labor or possibly it could only be the shifter alignment which is easy... but rarely does this fix this issue.

Had same problem twice on my 02. Both times it was the transmission and lucky for me I had an extended warranty. I would walk from the car unless price is dropped at least 3,000.00 or get them to repair car first. Dont start off in a ditch without a shovel.

If you feel comfortable working on cars get the price down as low as you can. You can pull the transmission and fix reverse pretty easy. If it is the gear. You may need a new synchro but you can flip the gear if it is chewed up. Pretty easy once the trans is out of the car.

Some very good info. Dont assume or let someone convince you that its a simple shifter adjustment. If it was,,other gears would be effected. Our shifters are linked to the trans by ONE big shaft. It controls the shifting by twisting and moving forward and aft. So theres very little to be gained in the shifter area for this repair.

Good luck on your search for your C5
