Also, just for the record... I've only had it running for about 2 weeks. My builder and I had an agreement that since it was during his busiest time (a ton of sprint car business about this time), I would be patient. Needless to say, it was completely worth the wait.

Certainly the owner or builder knew to stagger the ring gaps ? 1 quart every 150 miles was bad.

Hard to say. He was a forum member and I'm not privy to his abilities/etc.

Regardless, the balance must not have been dead-nuts accurate as I managed to have a vibration eliminated by having my builder re-balance the assembly. Needless to say, it was worth the wait.

Did I miss the year of the block ? is it a 99 to 2001 block ? and are those the original pistons and rings ?

Most guys when they build or have engines built, go cheap on the pistons and use cheap rings two sets of good rings. Cheap pistons and cheap rings will leak oil.

One can not build a high performance engine on the cheep and expect it to last very long.

In the spirit that this thread might benefit others with oil consumption issues, I want to point out the procedure that dieseldave posted.

This procedure has been called many names like leak-down check, differential compression test, etc.. Using air into the cylinder and your ears is one of the best (if not the best) ways to diagnosis where the problem is with oil consumption or low compression.

Pistons are JE, rings were from Total Seal. I believe it's the original block from '99, but I'm not certain. I never verified this and simply ran with what I had.

A lot of that depends on the engine builder.I built an old four bolt main 350 out of a school bus that had 300,000 miles on it.It was going into a rat drag car(65 chevelle). We used auto zone el cheapo, pistons, rings(all cast) and bearings. He is on his fourth season running 12.4's and turning 6200 thru the traps. He uses no oil and it doesnt smoke!
