You say you tried tightening it - did you tighten the shifter base bolts or ? If it's a BPP shifter like mine, it also has bolts that secure the arm to the shifter. If those get loose, you will know it. If everything is tight, then I doubt a stocj shifter would fix the problem.

By loose what do you mean? That you have some play when its in gear? That it seems a little vauge in shifting? Or?

The shifter in the C5 is very simple, just basicaly a stick on a ball type of pivot and an arm that extends back into the trans. The shift gates and such is in the trans. Not a whole lot of adjustment or things to go wrong.

I just had my trans rebuilt and they put in a new style gate system, have not had it on the street yet (snow and ice issues) but it seems much more positive.

If you can't identify yours some pics of it could help someone identify it.

The C5/Z06 shifters and C6/Z06 shifters (both oem and after market) are all basically the same. They're similar to a late model Mustang or old VW shifter w/o any external "linkage" to adjust. They're referred to as "internal rail". They are unlike the old style GM Muncie or Saginaw shifters with external linkage that could be adjusted and rebuilt with washers/bushings/springs/levers/arms, etc.

Some images of your particular shifter would help in diagnosing the situation.

If it's "loose" (subjective term), it might be the after market shifter has the weakest bias springs installed...if indeed your particular shifter even has bias springs.

Or, it could be that the previous owner performed a shimming of the detent bolt, using to much shim material. That could make the feel of the shifter very sloppy and non precise.

Or, it could be the after market shifter is a generic "short shifter" from EBAY, made off shore, and is just worn out.
