I have a 2001 C5. The computer light on the dash is reading traction control, active handling and abs. I took it to the dealer and they told me that i need a new computer for $2700 just the part! Now it is also saying column lock? Can anyone please help me here or do I not have a choice but to go back to the dealer for both of these?
Other vette owners told me that the computer thing is okay to run without active handling etc., but a bit worried about the column thing!!
Re the TCS/AH/ABS caption, If the code is a C1214C (C is current H is history) the dealer is correct and the EBCM has failed. However, there are many parts to the active handling system and it could be a different problem.
If it is a bad EBCM you can send it to absfixer.com and have it repaired for about $150. Taking it off the car is easy and you can drive when its removed. You wont have any active handling protection until its refitted though.
Can you be more specific on the "column lock" message? Is the steering locked?
I had the service lights come on and all kinds of wierd stuff with mine and turned out to be an ignition switch, Ignition switches are notorious for newer gm vehicles doing wierd things, mine also would turn off the hvac when tcs/ahs would come on. About $70 for a new one and 1 hr to put on.
Thank you but please check back in with me in a couple of days.
Thank you for your response. The steering column is not locked but that's what i'm afraid of happening while driving. I purchased a new battery as I was told this might be the problem(low voltage), battery was original 2001. I will then try the code check and then post the codes for you.
Finally, with all of your help I figured out what was wrong!!
Thank you to all of you who responded. We bought a brand new battery since it was eight years old and everything went away. All dash lights cleared, column lock is now fine too. Could you imagine, this only cost me $130 to fix and the dealership was going to charge me $2700 + tx. and all it needed was a brand new battery!!
