Man you guys are tough... Didn't even give him 24 hours to feel the pain first.
If it is the output shaft, who carries the hardened version?
I think BPP and Vette Doctors both have them. Gears themselves should be okay. Chris, do you know if the shafts are the same for the 3.42s and 3.73s? This was a 3.73 unit.
Most people on this forum don't like A4's
But they're real nice folks when they need a ride home :D

I am going to say yes because the rears are interchangeable which would mean the halfshafts slide into both rears the same. With that being the case I would be 99% sure that the diameter of the inside of the output shaft will be the sameas well. He is really beat that he has the 3:73's because they do not have any warranty.. :(
When I broke the left shaft in the diff... it was in the 3.73 unit. I took it to the dealership and they fixed it under warranty. They didnt have a clue that it was any different than the stock unit. To the eye... the unit looks exactly the same.
Dont tell them that you have the 3.73's... just tell them not to swap out the unit or do anything with the parts in that unit unless they tell you ahead of time. What I expect to happen is... they will take a part the unit... tell you the shaft is broken... you tell them to replace it... and it goes back together like before...
This is what happened to me... I got my 3.73's fixed for free. If you play it the same way... you can have that happen too.

That is good to know.
Joe, maybe it's worth taking it to a different dealer. Maybe Hefner can hook you up with Lewisville or you could have the warranty handled at a non-GM shop that might also not look to closely. :smash:
Re: Hard launch - something broke :( (ToplessTexan)
I feel your pain I was in the black vet that broke right after you. My clutch and transmission are fine, along with the fact that the car rolls fine as well. As far as the dealership good luck around here, some might fix it some might give you crap. I am going to get on the phone Monday morning and order the hardend shafts. Good luck and keep us updated.
Chris
Brent - Thanks! I was hoping you got the burnout, but that's cool.
As for you A4 guys razzing me - :p: I still have way more fun with my MN6 than you do with your "I'm not a good enough driver to be a consistent racer with a 6-speed" A4's. And correct me if I'm wrong (really,) but don't A4's also have output shafts in the rear? You try launching hard on very sticky tires and tell me how you do. Go rant on some stick vs. auto thread. This one's not about that. :nono:

Thanks Chris. Let's swap emails about our solutions. Who are you ordering from, BPP or VetteDocs?
One other tip, be sure to clean up the inner fender wells so you dont have an inch of melted rubber hanging everywhere... I forgot to do that when I dropped off my car at the dealership... They kept asking me if I was Racing the car... in addition to the fact that the rubber in the wheel wells didnt match the Rubber that was on the car when it was brought into the dealership... :nono: :blueangel:
