Is this a new problem or has it been this way for a while?

Well, this can be one or more problems. The clutch hydraulics, ie: master cylinder and or clutch slave. The hard parts ie; clutch disc worn, worn psi plate fingers or the T/O bearing. And finally, maybe the shift forks in the tranny, worn out synchros or......

Try to give us more information and details.

First things first,,,,,,,,,,,MORE INFO!

- What Year?
- Stock OEM shifter?
- How many miles on the car?
- Ever changed the tranny fluid?????
- MODS????

Pull the shifter out and inspect the shift rod and shifter. If its OEM it looks like this. Nothing special:

Heres what an aftermarket KIRBAN Shifter looks like compared to stock:

Getting the demond key out to remove the ****:

Lubricate the rod in the shifter box with lithium grease.

The tranny fluid is dyno ATF. Change to AMSOIL Synthetic for a highly improved shift feel.

If theres no mechanical stuff wrong,,,,all the above things ill help.

It's a 1999
84,000 miles
stock clutch

My car has been doing this for about 2 months. In more detail, Sometime it shift from 1st right to 4th gear. I also have to strong arm it in reverse sometimes. 50% of the time it will not shift smoothly to reverse. I get this loud crackly sound like the tooth on the clutch is shattering if I said it right. I have no engine problems with my car.

Its very IN-EXPENSIVE to inspect and lube the shift linkage in the box and change the tranny fluid to AMSOIL ATF synthetic. You have a 99 so, if you use any other synthetic, it could damage your sunchros. AMSOIL synthetic ATF is compatable wher others are not. Just changing the oil to new Dino ATF will also help.

If that doesnt help,,,,,its tear down and inspect time.

Shifting from 1st to 4th sounds like the CAGS is kicking in which is normal, but can be bypassed with a skip shift eliminator. Its easy to do and around $20.
