I've been hearing an intermittent squeak from the engine lately at lower rpm's. The wierd thing is that it sounds like it's coming fom the engine itself, not the accessories. I've checked all of the tensioner and idler pullies, not there. If I spray some belt dressing on the belt while running there's no difference. If you stand over the engine and listen, the sound seems to come from the center of the engine. I have heard this same sound from the engine in my friend's 03 Z06. Last I heard he hasn't figured it out. At this point the only idea I have is to pin the crank. Maybe the balancer is slipping slightly on the snout? It's an ATI.
Any thoughts or suggestions? This is driving me nuts...
Thanks.
Justin

To better ID the source of the noise try taking the accessory drive belts off and run the engine to see if the noise is still there. Your belt dressing won't identify a bad bearing. If the noise is gone with the drive belts off then start checking idler and tensioner pulley bearings. Do the same on the a/c drive pulley, there is a bearing in the clutch there as well.
Long shot, but try removing the oil fill cap while you hear the noise to see if it chances it. The front cover seal can make a high frequency noise if crankcase pressure gets too high.
