Default As Fast as Z06

I want the Z06 but I do not want a Manual Transmission. So, I'm thinking of buying a 2004 (C5). My questions are these:

What are the differences in the Z06 engine and the 2004 (C5) engine?

What percentage of performance gain on the Z06 came from weight, exhaust and gearing, compared to the 2004 (C5)? In effect, if I take a 2004 (C5) and add; air flow, exhaust and gearing, will I gain comparable HP to a Z06?

Do you want to drag or just have a zippy car for driving around town?

The main difference between the engines is the head/cam package.

With an A4 you should/could do any number of mods to get it more fun to drive. T/C and gears, Head/cam, or even just a 100 shot of nitrous.

Talk to a tuner near you (find one on here)

Have fun

Or buy the Z06 and install an automatic trans. Easy enough to do...

It's not as hard as you might think.

Very zippy - fun to drive and it will handle great.

Damn, never thought of that but for some reason, it just doesn't sound (PC). I know I'm asking about mods but to take a Z06 and replace the Trans. with an Auto just doesn't sound right. lol

You're right, it does sound absurd to do it, but it is probablly cheaper than getting a coupe and doing all the mods.

There was a guy in the forsale section selling a complete auto drivetrain a while back. I cant remember how much though.

Thanks for the advice but I’m not interested in buying drive trains or mutilating a Z06, I just want to get different views on my initial questions.

Buy a Z, you wont regret it....if not, stall it-throw a cam and some gears and should be close.

If you can do the work yourself, then I'd say go with a decent head/cam setup with long tube headers., high stall T/C and 3.42 gears.

If you're paying someone to do it - go with a procharger on a stock LS1.

What ever you decide, Have fun.

How do you guys who suggest a high stall converter deal with the slippage at low speed driving? Like when you're cruising at about 19% throttle doing maybe 35 and want to increase speed to 40-45 kind of quickly but don't want to really nail it? I find that particular part of driving an A$ with 3.42s and stall annoying. when I have to get on it more like anything above about 35% throttle, I love it, but that low down easy around town driving bothers me, I can't imagine .373 gears and a 3600 stall (mine is a 2800 vig restalled by precision for me).

I must say it is much more zippy though! I also did LG LT headers.

Not so-not only do you have to buy the a4, you have to change out the computer, pull all the clutch stuff out, and install the new shift linkage for the a4.

I had the same desires, Z06 engine w/auto trans. I purchased my 2004 coupe for the purpose of putting in a Z06 engine and having an automatic. I believe it is much faster than a new 2009 Z06 now. (Read Signature below)

The ZO6 performance package consists of:

- Higher compression heads with bigger valves
- Lighter better flowing Ti Mufflers
- Wider/ better grip non runflat Super Car Tires
- LS6 better flowing intake manifold. (later C5's used this improvement)
- Larger descreened MAF
- Better flowing air filter box
- Larger injectors
- Better flowing exhaust manifolds (later C5's used this improvement)
- Bigger sway bars with metal end links
- Lighter body and interior and thinner windshield
- Higher ratio rear-end gearing 342's
- MN12 transmission

With out the heads / cam improvement or some sort of power adder, you not going to see a ZO6 power improvement.

see my sig, with those mods Babycar will suck up any C5 or C6 Z06.
Or I could have bought a Z06, done all the work to change out the trani and the cut the top off.
Point is you will NEED to change your heads and your cam, consider upgrading your exhaust and intake and, maybe, add a TC.AND a real good tune. That should get you where you want to be
You can purchase most of the stuff you need out of the parts for sale section of the forum.
Good luck
