Default Open differential

I just confirmed my differential (80k 2001 Z06) is not locking up both rear wheels in low traction conditions.

How hard is that to fix? Is it a do-it-yourself project?

Thanks!

Can it be serviced without taking the differential off the car?

You can service it as far as putting new fluid and taking the old fluid out, but to actually get into the unit to replace parts you have to take it off the tranny. Jay

I recently replaced a broken output shaft in my differential. While I had it apart I went ahead and replaced the posi clutches and springs. It turned out that the bellvile type spring in both clutch packs was broken. There are several write-ups for removing the differential from the car, and I broke out my service manual for some details to dissassemble the housing. I had to buy a large C-clamp to get the passenger side output shaft out, but if you had a press it would work even better. I bought my new clutch packs from DTE (forum sponsor).

Yeah when i did my hardend output shaft install, i found the clutch pack shim was broken...THank God i found this out or i wouldve had a nice destroyed rear end with a hardend output shaft worth nothing. Jay
