There is zero need for any external pulley markings though, because there is not a thing you can do to adjust spark timing from within the engine bay.

If you have a laptop and some tuning software, you can adjust the values within the half-dozen or so timing tables within the PCM logic...but the PCM is always in direct control of firing the plugs.

Alright then, good to know. Thanks for all the help guys.

Who makes that puller?
Also, the fluid inside the steering shaft, where does that come from ? Does it have it's own reservoir ?

Can't speak to that particular puller, but the fluid in the rack assembly comes from the regular power steering fluid reservoir that also supplies the pump.

It's no wonder GM is going broke - eliminating the crank key is just about the dumbest bit of engineering I ever saw. Give me just one reason why anyone would do this? Were they trying to save the five-cents that each key might have cost?

Don't use it. Not necessary if the interference fit is correct and the service manual is followed if using the stock GM bolt (new of course).

So my question is, can I put a keyed pulley on my smooth shaft. I'm working on an 06 c6 6.0 and I do not want to put a oem pulley back on and really do not want to drill it. What are my options?.

Heres the thing, its a bitch job to put a balancer on these cars. Pin it, change the crank seal AND locktite 242 it. The shop didnt use the key when they did mine and the bolt backed out. I put an ATI on and followed the ATI instructions and used their supplied lube and torqued it down to 245ft lbs but didnt replace the oil seal. The balancer spun, the seal leaked and the bolt backed off; none of the three had anything to do with the other, just all 3 happened. I keyed it, replaced the crankshaft oil seal and blue locktited it. Zero movement since; do it ONE time
