Default Water Wetter?

Walking through the Winston Cup garage in Daytona this morning I saw one of the vendors (BSR) selling Water Wetter. Suposed to reduce coolant temperature. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this in a C-5? Does it work with our 5-year antifreeze? Would this do the same thing as a low temperature thermostat? Thanks for your input.

With the proper mixture it is suppose to lower operating temp's up to 20 degrees. A lot of SCCA's guys use it.
Distilled water, 10% antifreeze, and 1 bottle of water wetter in a flushed system.
I will be adding it this week and will update.

Water wetter breaks down the surface tension of the liquid, allowing it to flow with less friction
thru the system...This keeps it somewhat cooler.
Some fire departments actually add it to the water stream in the pumper. It allows the water to shoot
further from the nozzle, and reach higher on a fire in a high-rise building . They call it "Rapid Water".

I don't use it, simply because GM didn't put it in originally, so I figure it's not necessary. :seeya

I have used this recently and yet to have a different reading from the temp gauge. I'll see how it does during the summer months.

Be very careful is going less the 40% with Dexcool, you may end up with major problems.

Think Redline said 20% minimum Dexcool. Something to do with the AC freezing something.

I tried this product in a 6-71 blown pro-street car that I owned. It didn't really seem to work as advertised in my car. On the other side of the coin, someone I know told me that it did lower their coolant temp by approx. 15 degrees in his streetrod.

There have been a lot of documented cases of Dexcool not providing adequate corrosion protection with less then 40% and they strongly recommend you stay with the 50% mixture. This was based on some recent GM/Texaco research that was reported out in a paper about a year ago.

OK, now this is NOT a flame, nor is it an endorsement for Water Wetter (which I've never used) but....

There are about a zillion things that GM didn't put in originally to the 'Vette.

Things like high flow air filters and cat back exhausts, ported throttle bodies, carbon fiber fuel rail covers, and long tube headers, Ripper shifters, CAGS defeat, Powerloaders, nitrous, superchargers, and high flow heads, ...the list goes on.

I can understand being reluctant to use an unfamiliar product on or in your car. But the reasoning that "GM didn't put it in originally", well, that argument just doesn't hold water (pun intended)

It is definately a summer product. 10% give no freezing protection. In Florida, we're past freezes, so we'll see what happens.

If you do not run at least 20% coolant, and you plan on using your air conditioning you are asking for trouble. The condensor gets cold enough to possibly freeze the coolant. I would definately follow Red Line's recommendations on this, as they specifically call out about running the a/c and the proper coolant mixture.

Hey BluHawk141, Thanks for the post. I have a bottle of Water Wetter sitting in the garage waiting for spring. Wondering what mod helped to to reach the high torque #'s you have. As you can see in my sig. my torque seems a little on the low side at mid 360's. I have LPE's stage II cam. Thanks Whiteboy

I have a bottle sitting in the garage that will probably never get used. I don't feel comfortable increasing my water/dexcool ratio.

WaterWetter works by reducing the surface tension of the water. What this does is allow it to better reach all of the surfaces of the castings, which are not smooth. This allows it to take away more heat. This works for water, not coolant, so the less water in the mix, the less the cooling gain. I run 25% coolant, 75% water in all my vehicles and use water wetter. It's good for 10 to 15 degrees cooler temps in my Blazer when towing heavy loads.

I live in an extremely warm area where temps will be in the 110's and 120's in the summer months. I tried it in both my Suburban (blown 454) and C5 and honestly didn't see more than maybe a 5 degree difference in either one. Of course I am just going off of my dash gauges. This summer I will try and use an accurate thermometer to test it.

Water Wetter is at its best in pure water in a race car. It might be worth a few degrees in a street car with antifreeze. But I'm not sure the latter is its intended purpose.

I found even with my massive LPE radiator/oilcooler the red line product in bumper to bumper keeps me 5-7 deg. cooler.Just dont use it to replace antifreeze use it as part of your watter mixture. On my 99 Vert auto it made a 1-3 degree diff. it can only help slightly, more important in a auto trans, with the heat here in AZ. you grasp for each degree.David Smilovic
