You have the dreaded fuel gauge sender problem. Caused by a build-up of crap on the sensor in the tank. Get a few bottles of Techron fuel system cleaner from you local auto parts store and dump in the gas tank. Make sure you are using premuim top-tier fuel. It should clear up within the tank of fuel.

Get the Techron PLUS – best for sulfur deposits, which is most likely the cause.

Run a bottle through a couple of times per year to keep the fuel tank sensors clean.

It may take two or three (or four) tanks of fuel with the Techron PLUS added to repair the fuel gauge reading at this point in time.

If the problem occurs more at a certain drive time (for most 40 minutes) than a particular fuel level then it is probably a firmware problem.

Go to this site and enter your vin. It will give you the firmware updates for your vehicle. Take them to the dealer and have them check to see if they're done and if not enter them.

http://tis2web.service.gm.com/tis2web

If you have a custom tune this is a problem as they will have to set everything back to stock. This is why I haven't tried it yet.

I don't have any personal experience this fix works but others have said it works. All I know is if your gauge drops after driving 40 minutes every time, all the Techron or Seafoam in the world won't fix it.

I ran my tank down to almost bone dry because well, I kept putting it off. It never sputtered but I'm sure it was very close. the next time I filled my tank up and it got down to about 1/4 a tank of gas it suddenly dropped to nothing like yours did. I haven't had it do it since but i'll throw some tech in there.

been there done that bought the t shirt.....save your money on the additives...just "wiggle your ***" take the car on a less traveled road and at around 40-50 mph move the wheel hard left and hard right two times...this will fix your problem. its not a perminent fix but neither is the fuel additive and you just saved 7 bucks.
