Hi, this is my first time here in the C5 section, I have a C3, but I'm trying to help my brother out with a question he has about the MS4 cam. My brother has a 2001 Z28 Camaro with a stock LS1, for right now, and is interested in the MS4 cam. My/his question is, will there be any valve clearance issues using the MS4 cam with the stock heads/ valves? He's looking into purchasing the kit, so it will come with the springs and pushrods, and is also going to purchase some headers and things to complement the cam. His Camaro has gears, but not sure what they are. Oh, the engine has about 60,XXX miles. Can anybody help me and my brother out with this one?

 

nope no issues, but it will be reallllllly close. i had one in my z06 before i went supercharger and i loved it! with gears it outa really wake the car up.

OK, I'll make sure to tell him to check for clearance. What Lobe separation do you guys recommend? I noticed on the website it has an option to choose the push rod length, does anybody know what length he should get the push rods? I'm asking this since there's no way to check for length before ordering the kit.

 

I had a 112 with 7.4's and i think 111 would been too much for street with stock 3.42's

 

You really need to check PTV clearance yourself. When I did my head/cam everyone told me no problem....and after checking I had to flycut my pistons. As for pushrod length you need to check after heads are installed - you can get them in a few days while you are putting the rest of the car back together. If you order them ahead they may not be right and you will be trying to sell them later.

You can call Manton Pushrods and order the exact length needed also!

 

Piston to valve clearance will be almost paper thin. On good over revv can put a valve and piston together. My buddy has this cam with his 2000 SS and has this issue. Along with this cam you will have to get hardened pushrods, and new valve springs. You can even have a custom cam ground for the price of the MS4 cam. If you have it custom ground you can have the lift slightly less so the valve doesnt open as high. Just as a precaution.

 

I'm going to tell my brother this. He's planning on getting the kit that comes with the push rods, springs,etc... Is there any other cam you guys can recommend that will sound like the MS4 cam with a slightly smaller lift, that will have a greater clearance between the cam and the valves?

 

A custom ground cam, you can still get the choppy sound and make good HP without the MS4 name. Also If you are going to use different rockers be careful what you choose as that will also contribute to lift size and clearance.

I tried looking for the specs in that cam, but couldn't find anything, are those custom grind cams(lg g5x3 specs)? What lifters do you guys recommend? My brother needs to buy new lifters because one of his is messed up. Also, I forgot to ask, will the springs that come with the MS4 cam fit the stock heads without machining, or will he have to get the heads machined?

OK. I saw a couple of videos on that cam and how it sounds, it's a good sounding cam. I told my brother about the LS7 lifters, but is it really necessary to buy the LS7 trays, or will they fit the LS1 trays? My brother has a book that recommends drilling a 1/2in. hole in the middle of the trays to allow more oil to come in, is that really a good idea?

Are you buying this for sound or specific performance goals? There are many good cams out that that perform well with less of a PTV concern. Lift is not the issue, it is ramp rate and duration at 0.006 that will determine PTV. Total lift is not important for PTV.

 

Jordan, I would recommend you talk to the vendor/manufacturer of your choice and purchase a 'package' from them. I'm sure TSP would happy to sell you whatever cam, pushrods, valvesprings, etc... you need to complete the job.

 

Well my brother is buying it for both sound and performance,I'm just trying to help him get some of his questions answered because he wants the ms4 cam for his 01 Z28. I have a 74 corvette, so this is my first post here in the C5 section. I have emailed TS about the MS4 cam and if I don't get a response by tomorrow I'm gonna call them to ask a few other questions. Will adding a slightly thicker head gasket give the valve to piston a little more clearance? I know that this is gonna mess with the compression ratio, but will it help?

 

Very poor trade-off as you are swapping compression for cam size. Does he have a performance goal in mind?

 

May I ask how the MS4 cam came to mind? When I think camaro, I think torque...The MS4 cam is more of an HP cam! Most Heavy LSX platforms need TQ of HP....Check out cams in the 220's-230's...

Maybe a cam request from comp would be a nice choice. They will be able to give you advances so he can choose which one he likes...

I ran the MS4 cam with stock heads for ~8,000 miles, and everything ran great, the cam will fit with stock heads.
