Why don't people just disconnect the battery instead of using a trickle charger?
Is there a downside to disconnecting the battery?
Dave
One thing I can think of right off the bat...you'll loose all your learned fuel trims. If your tune is a little off, the car will misbehave a little when you start driving it again. My tune is great, except when idling with the a/c on. The first few weeks of the season, when the defogger's on, the car would stall when coming to a stop. It learns it's way out of it, so I don't bother fixing it.
Even a disconnected battery will lose some power over extended time. I like my expensive battery to be at peak power at all times. My car frequently hibernates for six months or more, in AZ summer and/or winter.
I use a BATTERY TENDER PLUS which is not a "trickle charger" but a float maintenance charger. It charges the battery to peak power, then goes into a "sleep mode" until it's needed again. It can't over charge the battery.
I also like to have the memory functions maintained, alarm system activated, be able to lock/unlock the doors and trunk, etc.
I've always wondered why the PCM forgets everything the second you disconnect the battery, but the radio remembers all your presets till the day after doomsday. But not the time.

10-4--I use the battery Tender JR.. Keeps my red top perfect for months at a time--plugs into the wall--dont need any other charger/maintaainer--
I have a battery tender, and it works great. I rarely have to use it though, because I just pull off the negative cable, if
I'm not gonna drive it for a day, or so.
I'd say it depends how much you use the car and whether the journeys are short hops when you do use it.
For me it comes out once a week so I wouldn't want to be playing around with the battery leads that often. If it was put away for the Winter I'd disconnect it.
I have a Yellow Top which is more tolerant to discharge than a Red Top. Even so I put it on the trickle charger if its standing idle.

The only thing you will lose is the time thats set on your radio.
