I remeber someone telling me that there is a way to have the traction control always off untill you turn it on. So that when you start up the car the traction control is off, and when you want it on all you do is push the button. I tried to do a search but did not find anything. Anyone know anything about this? Thanks for any infomation.
there was an aftermarket product that would do this known as the laptrax tracActive controller. basically it was a small microcontroller that you would tap into the controls for the TC and when you start your car it would automatically push the button for you and turn the system off. you could program it to turn both off, just the TC or TC/active handling. it could also push the reset button for you so the DIC message automatically clears. then if you want you can turn the TC back on with the button.
the biggest problem with it is that with my car being a 99 you have to be stopped to go into comp mode (stupidest idea ever) but you can turn off the TC and AH while moving. so if I were to start the car moving within 5 seconds of turning the ignition on, the TC/AH would turn off fine, but the car would not allow it to go into comp mode and turn the AH back on. I wanted the TC off and AH to stay on, it wouldn't do that for me. I thought it wouldn't be much of a problem, but it turns out I frequently start the car moving within 5 seconds, because I had that issue a number of times. due to this limitation I pretty quickly set it to do nothing mode and its been that way for years.
the product didn't seem to do well for others either as far as I can tell. Laptrax went out of business a couple of years ago. I bought mine at a high discount right before they went away because I knew it was something I really wanted to have in my C5. although as I've mentioned I find that I never use it. I guess it I ever went to the track and wanted it off I could put it back into use again...who knows.
Wow, you're moving within 5 seconds of starting the car? I can't even fathom that. I get in, start the engine, put on my seatbelt, release the parking brake, check mirrors and then start moving. I don't think I could do all of that in less than 5 seconds, impressive.
But yeah, if you can find one of those laptrax devices you'd be all set. I have one of them too.

Dope
I hadn't thought it possible either but if I wasn't paying attention I would start to go within 5 seconds...if that's really what it is. it feels like 15 seconds when you're sitting there holding it down.
at my old house the driveway was slightly slopped so often times I would let the car roll out into the cul-de-sac under gravity power and start it up as it was coming to a stop. that really screwed up laptrax
I've had a laptrax in my car (99 vert) for 3 years and have never had a problem. You DO have to wait aprox 15 secs b4 going into gear. Except for when I'm the wheel man on a bank heist I don't have any problem waiting the 15 seconds. Also once the laptrax engages comp mode the only thing you can do while the car is in gear is put AH and TC on. You can not disengage everything with the car in gear- you have to stopped & in park. Anyway that's the way my car works and also the way the owners manual says it should work.
