295 tires vs 305 width
How much wider is the 305 tire compared to the 295. Is it like a half inch wider.

But that doesnt mean you'll get more tread on the road.
295 and 305 are measured at sidewall buldge. Differences in sidewall, shoulder and tread design contribute to 'tread width'.
A 285 could have more tread on the road than a 305 depending construction method.

you have to remember that 295 means 295mm from bead to bead. Also please take into account what Jim mention. For a specific width you need the proper rim width to support a certain size. Ideal rim width for a 305 is 10.5

those measurements are on the same manufactures tire. Not always the same comparing two different manufactures.
ex my Mich 18x335/30 is 13.1" wide. my Hoosier 18x335/30 is 13.6" wide full 1/2 in difference
And that is just the tread width. the Mich is 13.3" overall width with the 13.1" tread with
the Hoosier 18x335/30 is 14" wide with a 13.6" tread width
The Hoosier is 3/4" Over all wider then the Mich. the Mich needs a 12" rim the Hoosier needs a 13" rim
so compare apples to apples
Hoosier 18x305/30 ----------- - Mich 18x275/35
Hoosier 18x335/30 ------------- Mich 18x335/30
