Hi, so I have noticed latley when shifting from 4th to 5th that I can sometimes hit reverse and the tranny will grind. Shouldn't there be a lockout that keeps this from happening? I had an 01Z for 4 years and never had an issue, and now with my 02 I have done it a few times. Help is appreciated.
thanks

I've got the exact same problem on my '04 Z16. I've got a new Lockout solenoid assy. but haven't had the time to install it. $169.00 list from Dealer. I think it can be changed without removing the transmission. Physically it is mounted on top of the trans. The solenoid is supposed to activate at 3mph, I'm told that it is possible to force past the lockout, I really don't know about that.
It is easy to install, Just remember that there are four bolts at the back frame that holds the differential together. Those are the only ones you need to take off to bring the frame down. Prior to that, you also have to take off the shocks, brakes, E-brake, etc., etc.. It really isnt too bad, just remember not to drop the transmission too low or you could mess something up at the front of the engine. Good Luck

I'm hoping to be able to snake my skinny-*** arm around the transmission to change the solenoid without dropping the suspension. I just installed a lift in my garage last weekend, I'm going to try it this afternoon.

I got my Z in the air last night and was able to change the Lockout Solenoid without any real hassles. Didn't have time to take it out for a spin to see if it made any difference. Will let you know tomorrow. By the way, the old part looks fine. Coil resistance is the same as the new one. Nothing obviously wrong. Long arms and a lift necessary to change without dropping trans.

I knows its an old thread but mine i think is going out. How long did it take you to change out with just some jack stands?

I did mine with the car on jackstands. After I got the car in the air, the hardest part was getting the electrical connection apart. You have to pry the locking clip open, and pull it apart. I used a very long-bladed screwdriver to pry the clip open, and pulled the connector apart with my other hand. I used a 34mm deep socket to remove the solenoid. It only took a few minutes. You don't have to lower any rear suspension parts...
