Re: Help with Torque Converter choice (CHRIS NJ C5)
When you refer to looseness what are you talking about? Do you mean that the wheels spin or are you talking about something else? I'm trying to get used to the LINGO...thanks for helping out the "technically challenged".
Re: Help with Torque Converter choice (Buckmaster)
I have the Yank 3000/2.0 STR right now and it is a great TC and VERY streetable. You can drive it around town without knowing it's in there but when you want it, it's there and very strong. I am upgrading to the 3.42's and SY3500 in a bout a month with the TransGo kit also :D
looks like the same route I'm going....just need the computer now :D

On a stock converter, it locks up at about 1400 rpm's. Meaning it is fluid driven up to 1400 rpm's and the clutches aren't locked together. When the clutches are locked, it's mechanically driven. Kind of like a "6 speed car." You hardly even notice it at 1400. With the higher stall converter, it's fluid driven up to the point of the "stall." So on a 3200 stall converter, It's fluid driven up to 3200 rpm's. Fluid driven is not as responsive as say a 6 speed car which is mechanically locked by the clutch. So, you feel a little sloppiness up to the point of stall. Meaning you may have to give it more gas to make it move. When it hits the stall, or "flashes" from a dead stop, your STR, (Stall Torque Ratio) comes into play. Mine is a 2.1 STR. So at a 3200 rpm flash the torque is increased by 210%. Meaning that if my torque is normally 200 ft lbs, it will be 420 ft lbs when it flashes. This gives you the quicker launch. Like I said in my earlier post, think about getting some stickier tires.
When he says "looseness" he is talking about how it feels when you accelarate normally from a stop like a traffic light or stop sign. Kind of feels sluggish, like the trans is slipping (which it is I think).
Either that or how he behaves at a bar on a Friday night after a few drinks :jester
Does one flash when driving at 30 MPH and flooring the pedal? or is it only
a Flash when you go from ZERO to the floor?
Yes, the converter flashes at the stall speed, and from my understanding the STR only comes into play when the convertet isn't moving. Meaning from a dead stop only.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.
