Default Texas Speed Cam Selection

The mod bug will not leave me alone.

I plan to purchase a cam package from Texas Speed and need some advice.

Mods on my 98 MN6
-ProFlow+ Cold Air Induction
-Carbon Fiber air duct
-BBK 80MM Throttle Body
-Breathless Performance Increase MAF Sensor
-LS6 Intake Manifold
-172* Thermostat
-Throttle Body Water Bypass
-TPIS Long Tube Headers
-B&B Tri Flow Sport Mufflers
-Pro Flow X-Pipe & High Flow Catalytic Converters
-Z06 Clutch
-3.90 Rear Hardened Axle Seals/Gears
-Hurst Short Throw Shifter
-Stock heads (will be upgraded along with injectors eventually)

Requirements
-I want to retain good street manners. No shut off/lugging at idle. The car is driven a few times per week and occasional 100-mile beach trip. I don't want it to lug in 6th.
-I'm looking for an overall power increase, not just fast up top.
-I do not want a significant decrease in gas mileage. (1-2 mpg is okay).

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Torquer 2 or 228R might be a good choice without going with too high of a lift/duration.

228 ish will work AH - SUM for you with a 6 speed and 3.90..... you can actually go pretty big with your combo and a good tuner...

I'm really leaning towards a 228R at 112LSA.

Its between this and the 224R. Both look good but what would be the major differences?

I'll contact TS but I'd like some of your opinions too.

I have the TS 224/224 581/581 114 and I sure do like it. My car has the auto A4 tranmission.

After countless youtube videos and reading through posts....

I want a 114 LSA. I'm not sure if I should go with the 224r or 228r. Everybody seems to like em. Decisions desisions....

I'm going to flip a coin lol.

I've personally had both 112LSA and 114LSA cams in my previous cars.

The 114 had a nice "burble" at idle, andthe 112 had a farm tractor sound.

This time I just got a 226 232 .595 .595 113+4 made by Comp Cams.

The extra exhaust duration will help clear the old charge, and the +4 will smooth out the 113LSA.

Should be a nice midrange cam that will work okay when I do forced induction down the road.

I sent an email and they said either will work well for my application.

I still need to get on the phone, I'll figure it out Monday.

Why limit yourself to just TSP? Don't get me wrong, good company, but there are lots of options out there. LG's G5X1, Tony Mamo's "Blue Pill" setup camshaft, Thunder Racing's TR224, or custom spec'd.

A year after I did all my bolt ons, I installed the TR224 on a 114 on stock heads. Very nice cam with no downside. I put down 370 RWHP. the power was nice and put my car right at ZO6 RWHP. Since I only drive the car on the weekend and maybe cruise it 100 miles, about two years later I wanted more. I wanted heads and I knew that AFR heads were going to give me a solid 40 RWHP, but since the motor was half apart i wanted a slightly larger cam so I bumped up to the TSP 228R on a 114. I was looking for about 10-15 more RWHP out of my cam. My goal was 420 RWHP.

After the new 228R, AFR heads milled .020 off, and a new ZO6 clutch were installed, the car had nicer power in the upper RPM range, but I seemed to have lost a little quickness in my lower RPM range. That may have been from my tune.

Just by crap luck, my new clutch crapped out about 1000 miles later, and I took the car to a professional shop for 3.90s and a new clutch. (ECS)

with the 3.90s, the car is very nicely balanced. Myself and a friend with the same set up dyno'd on the same day about 20 minutes apart, and our numbers with the 3.90s were within about 5 RWHP.

Even with my 3.90s, I passed my RWHP goal of 425RWHP and 400 RWTQ on a crap tune. Now a couple years later, my tune is very good and much better off the line.

I had the car spot on with the tune and took out all the bucking, but then I added an 85mm MAF a couple months ago, and need to spend more time getting out the little cold bucking I got back, which is easy to fix, your tuner just has to spend a little time with your car reading what the scan is tell you.

My 425 RWHP and 400RWTQ numbers was before I installed the FAST 90/90 and the 85mm MAF so maybe you can through another 20RWHP on top of those numbers.

I drove my car from Virginia to Florida and it ran great. Ill drive it to the beach on the weekend in 95 degree weather with the AC blairing and the top down and it runs great.

But the mod bug never goes away, and now im looking at the G5X3 cam on a 112.

With a good tuner, you'll really enjoy your car and the balance of the 228R, heads and 3.90s. Its a very good set up for the street or track

Thanks phils. You (along with Jon at TS) convinced me. 228r it is. It makes sense. If the mod bug didn't exist I'd be fine with the 224, but it does so I'm planning ahead lol.

a good rule of thumb I heard and it makes sense. Find the perfect cam for you, and then go the next size larger

great rule to follow, wish I had, would have saved me a second cam change. I went with the 228R 114LSA 405hp/376tq and really wasn't happy. I wanted more and found a deal on a comp 232/236 598/603 112LSA (no dyno, still messing with the tune) and love it . Drivability is the same and has the power level I was looking for. I have a 99 FRC.

224/224 581/581 112+0 here Very happy. quick throttle response and quicker then most bigger cammed cars out of corners and from a roll.
Not a dyno queen, but dont care. low 400s for both hp and tq. 03 LS6, TPIS Lts, randomtech High flow cats & X-pipe then straight pipes. TPIS 78 mm tb my own air intake stock LS6 intake

One bigger is 224/228 581/588 112+4

This is one of the cams I was looking at and now Texas Speed has a new cam out that's based on the 224. It's a 224/227 .615/.605 112 that supposedly dynoed very well. I've always heard that .600 was about the max lift you should go with the LS engines to maintain low end torque and driveability but they are claiming hp gains across the board with some changes in the advance points. I'd like to hear from someone who has installed one.
