How do I figure out whether its the right side or left side sender/float assembly without guessing? Is there a way to do this before we even get the tools out?
I tried the Techron treatment but after about 10 tankfuls it still does it.
What year is your car and how many miles on it. I went through this a few years ago with my '03 Z06. The list of components changed under warranty would water your eyes. GM also "gave" me an extended warranty on the fuel system. What I am thinking is that you should contact your GM dealer (don't hit me) and fight for some warranty coverage since this has been a widespread problem across the entire GM line and other car companies. Supposedly has to do with the sulphur in the gas. Just throwing money at parts will not neccesarily work. Good luck.
Ive been having the same problem, it went away for awhile after i used some fuel sysytem cleaner, and I've been using the Shell V-power gas... now its back.
I got the same problem after driving about 40 miles it drops to empty but to fix for now i just go into the manual diagnostics and clear the code. Im gonna trying calling GM and see if they can warranty it.

Your problem sounds like it's most likely not a sender problem but a problem with the firmware. I suspect it drops to empty after about 40 minutes driving no matter what the fuel level is and comes back to reading after the car is restarted. If that's the case you can go to the dealer and get the firmware update performed. Be advised if you have a custom tune you will lose it as the dealer must reflash the computer.
For a list of updates available for your car go here:
My specific problem is that when I fill up, the guage will not go all the way to "F". After about 50-75 miles it drops to "E" and sets the low fuel light. After about 180 miles it starts working again.
I have tried about 10 tankfulls of 93 octane Chevron gas w/techron, in addition I have added a bottle of techron treatment to each tankfull.

Yours also sounds like the firmware problem. I have the same but don't want to lose my custom tune so I'm just living with it.
I don't have a tune. Can a tune be done after the firmware?
Edit: OK please tell me what this firmware is. I have no clue.
Yes, a tune can be done after the firmware update.
Firmware is the program that runs the computers. Kinda like Windows on your PC at home.
Just go to a dealer and tell them you want the car checked for firmware updates, they'll know what to do. There is no update dedicated to the fuel gauge issue. Apparently it is embedded in one of the other updates.

Thanks Mark. What do they typically charge for this?
I really don't know how much they charge but I would think at least $100.00. I'm sure it varies a lot in different parts of the country.
Also, please understand that I'm not "guaranteeing" that this will fix your problem since I haven't done this myself. Others have reported on the forum that this works for symptoms the same as yours and mine and it does make sense to me. If it was a sensor problem I would think it would happen at a certain fuel level instead of after a certain driving time. Also I have used probably 20 cans of Techron and I only use Chevron gas to no effect.
If it weren't for my tune I would try this in a heartbeat and will when I do my next round of mods. If you do this please post your results so the rest of us can benefit.
