Default Dry Media CAI Intakes?

Hi, All,
I'm in the market for a CAI for my 04Z. I like the
dry media, instead of the oil soaked ones.
I have an AEM dry on my 05 GTO and like it.
Anyone know which one are dry?
I'm leaning towards a Vararam,if?

Thanks,
Larry

I have K&N filter that I dried out.

Clean it often with and air hose from the inside blowing air out.

Not a good idea, you might as well take off the filter and throw it away and drive without one.
Without oil a K&N filter cannot trap much of anything other then small dogs and cats, it needs the oil to expand the cotton fibers.
And never never use an air hose on any air filter it will seperate the media.
Gently tap it flat on a hard surface to get out the loose dirt, or just change it!

I don't doubt you get a higher dyno number, as you would with no filter. K&N specifically states in their cleaning instruction to NOT use compressed air. As was stated before a K&N, or any other brand filter designed to be oiled, is useless dry.

I agree. The only reason that a K&N filter even works is because of the oil. Remove the oil and you might as well remove the filter. This is fact.

What ever.

No problems here.

Nice clean cylinder heads, valves. and piston.

Pull the heads off each winter to check, replace springs as needed. new head bolts and gaskets and other items checking and replacing as needed.

No oil by-pass in the TB or Intake

25,000 miles of WOT 3000 to red line ( 6750 )

3:1 93:100 octane mix

Heck I have seen same year vettes as Mine with same mileage but never seen 4000+ rpms
Pulled the heads of that engine, pulled the tb and intake

looked like crap, as the owner never got on it.

tb looked like crap too. oil blow by, oil mist in the intake.

and YES he oiled is filter, just like the instructions say to do.

Don't think it was the oiled filter but from oil blow by.

But it was his car.

So suit your self. I will keep doing what I am doing, as for me it works.

as I mentioned I do take the filter out to clean off the dirt and repace with the other filter

trans cooler left, k & N Filter above, oil cooler right

Car is a front not a bottom breather

also 1/4" x 1/4" chicken wire to keep the BIG things out

In case your interested

little over 400 each RWHP and RWTQ on last winters dyno.

Hey man, whatever works for you. I mean in the old days, race cars with multiple Weber carbs had nothing at all as far as filtration. They were wide open intakes.

However, I guess they could live with the consequences since those engines got overhauled every couple of races. Also, they had no MAF's to muck up.

Are there any brand that are designed to be used
dry?
Also, I noticed that most filters are uncovered
in front of the radiator. Don't they get wet when
driven in the rain and does this harm them in any way?

buy a hood seal, and it wont get wet. the dry paper-like filters will filter better than any high flow filter out there including k&n filters. of course it is as the cost of losing hp if you go with the dry filter.

you're kinda effed.

if you were to get a vararam, and say you found a source for a dry filter. the first time you drove through a good high rain at any speed over 50mph your filter would be drenched, and ruined.. in need of replacement. if you had a k&n with the oil it wouldnt make 10 ****s of difference if it got wet or not, unless you totally pulled in a stream of water and locked your motor, but thats a different story.

i understand the desire to run a dry element though, as i feel the same way. you can hold that k&n up and spy on the neighbors through it theres so many holes... not a very good filter. paper flows pretty good anyhow when its clean, and according to some conjecture, yields more laminar flow.

anyhow, good luck.

local parts stores here have a few of the clamp on cone type paper filters of decent size.

The Stock air box used a dry air filter.

No matter what air filter you use, keep it clean. Going a whole year with out cleaning your air filter might like going a whole year with out changing your oil filter.

Or changing the filters on your home air handler unit.

keep that air filter clean. Change it often.
