The slave cylinder went out on my 98. They have the tranny/diff out of the car. The mechanic pointed out that the clutch self adjustment mechanism is about half way adjusted out. I can see a profile of the clutch and there seems to be 5/16 to 3/8 of material left on the clutch. There are 44000 miles on the car. He has quoted me 1100 for the slave job, 2000 for slave and clutch. Im having a hard time making a decision. Im leaning towards replacing the clutch too. Any and all input is appreciated.
You're "mechanic" is ripping you off. The cost of a new slave cylinder is around $130.00 from numerous sources. New LS6 clutchs are available from several GMPP distributors for under $500.00. The LUK pro-gold LS6 replacement clutch (same clutch as the one from GMPP) is available from several LUK distributors for around 400.00.
The prices I'm quoting you are retail, I'm sure he gets "jobber" pricing. You figure out the math on what he is charging you for labor.
The adjustment indicator at the 1/2 way point is not an indicator of excessive wear.
If he's got this torn down you're already in trouble for that price. If not run like HE!!. The whole clutch package C6Z installed should cost less that $1200 parts and labor.
p.s. when the Slave goes out it may have likely leaked fluid on you clutch disc. If it did you'll need to change.
This guy has worked on a few of my vehicles and the price has always been reasonable. Im dissapointed with them now. I feel as they are pricing this labor out like they are removing the transmission twice.
Well i told the shop to replace the clutch too. The mechanic showed me hot spots on the old flywheel. The clutch is super smooth now. I had them install the remote bleeder line .I think I made the right decision. thanks for the input guys.
