My C5 has just broke the 100k miles mark. All of a sudden the other day my regularly sloppy shifter became completely loose, to the point where I have to make 2 tries at finding the outside gears. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix this? I assume it wouldnt be as easy as installing a new shifter..... Its weird, I put the shifter in a gear and the whole shifter will move to the right or left several inches while in gear. Any suggestions or am I looking at a multi-thousand dollar investment here? Luckily Winter is coming..
I had the same problem on my 04 Z06, when I removed the stock shifter and replaced it with a C6 shifter. The two hold down bolts backed out after time and the entire unit became sloppy; even jumping out of first at random, own its own.
I removed the console, as mentioned above; placed the shifter in neutral and reinserted its aligning pin (at the front of the shifter), to hold the unit in position, then retorqued the mouning bolts with red Loctite applied. Problem solved with crisp responsive shifts once again.
Red LOCTITE is unnecessary on a 1/4-20" fastener, especially on the thin cast "box" beneath the shifter mechanism. That's for larger fasteners under lots of stress. It'll require heat to remove...
I took the day off work on Friday, I will post as I go. I appreciate the quick response on this. DB, it is constantly popping out of 1st!. Wish me luck guys.
