I agree, Bill, a street tune is the best tune.

I think there are a few shops in the Northern VA, DC area that may be worth heading to. I would guess it' 2-3 hours away.

There are a NUMBER of ways to get your engines PCM tuned:

-1 Drive your car to a tuner. Hopefully someone will chime in and point you to someone in your area. My tuner was 126 miles away and well worth the trip. The wife and I made a day out of the trip. We had dinner and a very FUN drive back home.

-2 Find a C5 friend in your area who has tuning software and is willing to help you out with a tune. You may have to purchase a license (EFI live license is $100.) You and him can do a really good street tune. Post up in the Scan & Tune and the Tech Section with a post asking for help finding good tuners in your surrounding area.
A friend of mine and I tuned my 02 ZO6 with my EFI version V1 without issue. I need Version V2 to tune my 06.

-3 Mail order tune! Call my buddy Chuck at Corvettes of Westchester and talk to him about tuning by mail. You can also cal ECS or any of the supporting tuners. That will give you an idea on what they offer.

Trust me if I can do it you can do it. Go and buy a 200 piece tool kit from sears and you have 90% of the tools. The other tools you need can be rented from autoparts store. You can get a set of PRC ported LS6 heads for around 1000 bucks and a cam kit for under 800 bucks boom you are set , but I know where you are coming from.

94-Vette has a good point. Installing mods have some hidden cost.

IF your going to do it correctly you will need the following if it isn't included with the cam:

- New Head Bolts (there one time use torque to yield bolts)
- New LS-2 timing chain (highly recommended)
- Chemicals; locktite, brake parts cleaner, antifreeze, oil and a filter if your even close to an oil change interval etc...
- Gaskets, timing chain cover and seal, water pump gasket, oil pump O ring seal!
- Aftermarket damper (highly recommended) or at least a new stock damper

- New damper bolt, Another onetime use torque to yield bolt! (recommend you spend the $25. for a new ARP Bolt)
- metal rods to insert into the holes in front of the block to insure that the lifters stay in place. (OPTIONAL but recommended)

- TUNE after the install!!!
------------------------------------------------------------

Tools that you will need or rent:

0-100 ft/lb torque wrench Rent at Autozone (AZ)
0-250 ft/lb torque wrench Rent at Autozone
Metric Tubing Wrenches Purchase, I got mine from sears. For steering rack power steering rack hydraulic lines
Three Jaw Puller Rent from AZ
Damper installation Tool I made my own from an old damper bolt.

I use the strap wrench "in the picture above" to hold the damper to prevent the engine from turning when torquing the damper bolt in place.

Wagner Paint stripper gun or a propane torch: It can be used to heat the old and NEW damper hub to approx 150-180 deg. Significantly decreases the force necessary to remove and reinstall the dampers!

Service manual for procedures, torque specs and reference.

Well,,,,thats all I can think of for now. So, add up all the extras and see where your at.

Start posting to gage interest in a MOD Party at your house or a friends garrage to install a cam. You will be amazed at what PIZZA and BEER will bring in!

You might luck out and find someone like me in your area that has ALL the tools and knowledge to help. Hell,,if they only have a couple of the tools, you that much further ahead. You might even find someone that is TUNING SAVVY!

With $2000 to spend I would say to add the A&A mod to the exhaust as that will make it nice and loud and buy a NOS kit. You will still have money left over and lots of power and noise to make you happy.

Best of luck to you with your future mods.

Your in the right place to ask questions This forum is a great place to learn. In alot of places (forums) you would have been flamed a thousand times and some *** would have added the all original comment of DO A SEARCH!

You will do with your money as you want but as someone already stated, a good start is to get a good free flowing exhaust and possibly an intake. Your motor is a big air pump basically. Intake, headers, and exhaust will be around $2K unless you find them used. Use the rest to get a good tune. Good luck.
