Default Valve stem leak

Have a leak on the right front tire of my 2000 coupe. Its not that big but when soap and water is applied it bubbles a bit, see pictures attached.
It comes from where the actuall stem meets the attaching nut on the rim.
Anyone else had this problem or knows how to fix it?
Tried the retighten procedure and it did nothing.

Thanks

Chris

I agree the tire will have to be broken down and the o ring gasket replaced.I think I would replace it after all it is nearly 10 years old.

What did you re-tighten to? There was an update to the manuals after printing that increased the value.

Your sensor uses an O ring. The later (newer ) sensors use a molded seal.

Heres what yours looks like:

You should just break the tire down and replace the O ring and then reassemble! That should take care of the issue.

Heres a picture of the newer sensor with the molded seal:

Thanks for the info, guess Ill have to take the tire off this winter and get it done. Where can one obtain this seal? The TMP is still working fine so dont plan on doing the battery change at this time.

Had the thought of loosening it and injecting some silicon sealent where the o-ring is with a syringe, anyone tried this?

If the rubber gasket is bad, most tire shops will fix it for free. Or at least I do at mine.

I think this is my problem. I'll fill the tire to 32-34psi and within 3-4 days its down to 27 or so. Car is 12 years old, original o-rings to the best of my knowledge. I hope someone does it for free.

When I installed the new valve stems in my new wheels I saturated the rubber seals with black silcone as I installed them. This lubricates and protects the rubber seal as it seats and fills in all the voids around the seals. I recommend that you do this when you install your new valve stems.

Its a very slow leak, was hard to find with soap and water mix, took a few min. to show up.
Just had new tires put on less that a year ago too.
Filled it up to 38 psi when it was about 60 out and today on the road it was at 35 psi and 45 degrees out. Dont think Im going to worry about it till its time for new tires again.

Thanks for the tip pcbunn!

Update-took mine into the tire shop, they had to re-seat the bead. Said it is actually pretty common with low profile tires. Free fix, should have gone back to the shop sooner.

If your TPMS sensors are the 10 year old originals, chances are you will be replacing all of them before you need new tires again.

Why wait to fix it right, with a new sensor and seal now?

Thanks-- and I know they are getting old- nice they lasted this long!
When I get new tires again, probably next year will change the batteries out myself, know there is a thread around here somewhere on how to do it.
The other 3 TMNS work great right now-- and as for the leak, have not put air in it in over a month and its still above 30 psi, dont see the point in messing with it especially with winter coming up.

You're lucky to have gotten nearly 10 years out of them.

Two TPMS sensors in my 2001 died during storage last winter, and I expect that the remaining two working sensors will need replacing after this winter as well.

anyone seen the schrader ez-sensors yet in shops? They are programmable and replace something like 90% of their OEM sensors...as direct swaps...supposedly. Search here turns up nothing on them. Google shows it as a very recently released product.

Yea, I know im on borrowed time with the TPMS but 3 out of 4 still work! The one that failed worked till I tried to reprogram the car-- start at front left and go clockwise to back left, now it does nothing. Maybe the battery is ok and I just did not get it to program right. Tried twice with a strong magnet, all the other checked in with the car just fine.
Of course I had to be the last one of 4 to fail.

Sure sounds like weak batteries to me. My old RF and LR sensors acted the same way as yours.

With the new ones installed, I got a horn chirp in just a couple of seconds after applying the magnet.

skydive, if it was working before trying the reprograming, try this. Heat the area of the rim around the valvestem good and hot with a hairdryer, and see if it will reprogram. Worked for me, and it's free.
