Default 2004 Z06 fuel filter replacement

I had my car on the dyno yesterday (after a cam and longtube install), and found that the car would start losing fuel pressure rapidly... idle was 60 psi, then right at WOT it'd drop down to about 50 psi. not sure how much lower it would have gone, but we didn't check. In any case, the tuner is fairly certain it's a clogged fuel filter.
Being an 04, I understand that the fuel filter, for some stupid reason, is intended to be a non-serviceable type of thing, and is located in the tank?!
Has anyone replaced their filter on 04 cars before, and how involved of a process is it? Any other ideas of what could cause fuel pressure to drop like that? The car is relatively high mileage (a little over 100k), so a dirty filter seems to be a reasonable assumption.
Anyways, thanks for any help!

You need to drop both fuel tanks to get the pump out. The sock is pretty big on the pump so it may not need serviced either?

If your loosing pressure you most likley have a fuel pump issue. How much HP are you making? If it were me and i was going to remove the tanks, I would be installing a high volume pump.

I had 45,000 miles on my 02 Z and i changed the filter. I cut it open and it wasnt that dirty.

Just have to drop the drivers tank. Its a big job though, I think the book time is around 8 hours to R&R the fuel bucket. In a 2004 Vette, the filter is non serviceable, its part of the fuel pump/bucket. You have to buy the whole fuel pump/bucket as an assembly..

looks similar to this one that has been modified for a larger pump

More than likely a weak fuel pump with over 100K miles on it..

If your tuner was able to keep the AFRs in line with the pressure drop you will be fine. In the 2004 cars, at WOT their will always be some pressure drop in the fuel line because the fuel pressure regulator is located in the fuel bucket as well. It just pressure drop accross the distance of the line from the length it has to go from the pressure regulator in the fuel tank all the way up to the fuel rails. Mine would drop to around 54-55psi at WOT with I was just cam and headers with only 3000 miles on the car.

If you do this you will need all the fuel lines and external fuel filter as well..

Just depends on the quality of fuel you're getting. When I changed what was probably the original filter at 75k, I dumped about 2 tablespoons of mud out of it. I don't know how my car was even running, but with the new filter it quit stumbling at start up.
